bass preamps

Hi guys,
I would like to ask regarding preamps,specifically regarding onboard preamps.I would like to know the significance of preamps to the overall tone of the bass and also how to judge what is good or bad in an onboard preamp.

its a personal choice, i did a lot of research and finally settle on aggie opb-3 for my warwick i hope its transparent enuff but offer a bit more tweakability to boost or cut certain frequency so that i can save space on my board cos i used to have a hartke vxl which works great for an outboard pre-
