I have the hartke preamp, very affordable and gives me a sweet slap tone. But if you want to utilize it for its drive capabilities forget it. The drive on it sounds like ASS. = )

Funnily enuff, I just got one for a gig whewre I don't trust their gear... yeah ballz...... good stuff for such a low price!

I was thinking of an effect which will always be "ON"
for all type of genre,.

definately a proper preamp, compressor and DI.. u def can't live without them

so far everything that has been mentioned (except the moogs) are mostly for tone shaping rather than actual effects per se.. and IMHO that is not the true essence of using effects.

to cut a long story short,

dirt pedal for heavy, chorus pedal for mellow. filter pedal for FUNKY. and yes, you can leave them 'on' all the time if they are subtle enough
