Heyhey.. thinking of getting a new bass, mebbe e btb405 or sth. can tell me whether this is advisable or can get sth better for that price range?

TIA

1.2k max? If you dig around really hard you might be able to get a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz for that amount. What kind of sound/music are you looking at here?

Well for 1.2k i think a fender jazz bass would be a good choice. Heard pretty good comments on the Warwick Rock Bass, anybody any comments on that bass? :) I personally am playing a Yamaha bass and i like it for its playability and lightness. Good basses like Warwick weighs a ton siah!

a rockbass is the 'budget' version of warwick's main line... but their definition of budget is different from most la. alder and ash bodies aren't what I would consider to be under budget, but yeah. you're basically paying for more 'normal' woods as opposed to ovangkol etc...

warwicks are pretty good in general! i haven't come across one i haven't liked yet.

Dont listen to Rottenramone, hes nuts :p

The 'safest' recommendation i have for are as follows:

You buy either a Precision bass, Jazz bass or a Stingray haha. It all depends on what generic sound youre looking for! But seriously, for now, it dosent have to be the real thing. Look at:

1) Made in Japan Fenders. Ard 1k, vintage vibe.
2) Made in Mexico Fenders, Ark 1+ more modern sounds generally (pickups)
3) OLP basses. Ard 450 for a 4 stringer. I'm referring to the Stingray copies.
4) Ibanez basses. Not too familiar here, but they are more modern sounding in general, and they look the part too.

just to add on to 3NAB's post:

1) MIJ fenders are THE shit. best price performance for any stock fender I've come across.
2) MIM fenders aren't too bad either. If you really want to you can get a low-priced MIM Jazz and switch out the pups or the preamp and you can get a pretty mean sound. My friend did that to his MIM Jazz bass ;)
3) Never tried OLPs before :x
4) Ibanez necks are fast! The tone isn't really what I'm looking for but if you've tried their stuff out, the 6-string necks are really thin. I guess if you're looking for playability over (my type of) sound then the Ibanez is your choice...

As for me... GAS requires that I save for my future Fender Deluxe Pbass Ash V in cherry sunburst ;)

..

i wouldn't say much about mexican fenders. i used to have a mim precision special with PJ config and with a active preamp to boot. needless to say it sucked balls. neck was on a permanent warp, didn't get any usable tones outta it. but i had to say that it was extremely light.

i had it for a bit before getting rid of the thing for 450.

My 4 string streamer totally rocks! it's slightly heavier and sounds like an active. still has that siganture warwick growl.

Only drawback that it's output is generally softer, and there's not much tonal variety. u turn the tone put from end to end it still sounds quite the same. build quality is cool too. neck feels very solid and tough. wont warp that easily. u'd have a hard time sheehan-ing. u'll never be able to bend the neck down to hear that low B. feels too solid to put light guage strings up there. =p

overall it still basically sounds punchy and growly like a warwick should. big bang for the buck.

i've also played a corvette 5 string too. real good.. rockbasses aint no joke.

You my friend, got good taste in colors :D Deluxe Pbass is a mutil-tone machine man. I got a Jazz bass freak of a friend who eventually gave in to a P bass Deluxe. I dont think hes looked back since!

Back to the thread: You'll save alot of money if you go passive, meaning the bass got no battery. I sure sound like a techie now! Give the J&D bass (stained red) with a seemingly Ash body a go, its at Ranking. Its about 450 i think, try that, then move to swee lee to test drive the more expensive ones.

It depends la. That's why you have to test them out before buying ;) I'm not saying that MIM fenders are all good... but there are a few gems in all the loads of mediocre ones out there :D

Thanks man ;) Anyway what you (OP) can do is to get the passive bass and add an outboard preamp if you don't like the sound. Harke VXL Attack is pretty good for the money; just don't count on it for pure distortion.
