Basic Bass guitar pedals for beginners

I'm just starting out as a bass player. I am wondering what kind of bass effects/pedals are useful for a beginner like me. What pedals are useful and which brands are good and cost effective? I know that a bass equalizer and compressor is useful but I do not know which brand is good. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on that.

if you have an idea of how you want your bass to sound like (on the assumption that it currently doesn't sound that way without effects pedals), you could go to a shop that sells pedals and explain how you want your bass to sound like (and let the person hear the track if possible).

most shops that sell effects pedals tend to be run or manned by a musician who can advise you on the pedals that might bring you nearer to the sound that you want. you can probably test the effects pedals until you get the sound that you want, or close to the sound that you want.

in my opinion, multi-effects like those produced by Zoom are not worth the time and money. it does a lot of effects, but not very well. those that actually do the job well enough are pretty expensive.

The most useful and best bass effect is your hands.

Learn how to get all the tones you hear in your head out from your hands, unless you require certain pedals for specific needs - e.g. distortion, fuzz, etc.

If you mostly only play music that requires clean tones, play clean first to train your ear and your technique.

While compression is often said to be one of the most useful pedals around, if you are just starting out as a bass player, you most probably wouldn't notice the difference.

As what rentabass have said, most likely you wouldn't need any pedals unless you need specific effects. Most music out there only requires clean tones unlike guitar players.

As for equalizers, if you have a on-board, why not try to use it before going for any out-board preamps.

For me, I would rather save all the money spent on pedals to get a better bass. haha. personal experience

I used spent a couple hundreds to buy bass effects & pedals but sold them all away.. most of the songs ( rock & alt ) we play don't require "exotic" sounds.
Bass Synth , Chorus, Distortion sounds cool, but just that, period. IMHO.
I am currently running just two box, the Hartke Bass Attack ( love this so much ! ) and Boss Bass Equilizer.
Went shopping around for a Bass Compressor but frankly speaking, I couldn't hear the differences it made for my playing style because I don't even know how to play slaps (LOL) :)

+1 to EnEn. Try using what you have already, like your onboard preamp and even simple things like your amp settings. Learn how to adjust your EQ on those first before rushing to buy like...a GEB-7
