Hi There,

I got a PC assembled with following config : ASUS P5LD-VM motherboard,Pentium4 3 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, 400W power supply, EMU 1820 M sound card.

1. From the time I purchased I used to get a strange problem. Every now and then a message pops up in the system tray, saying power surge on USB port. I used to neglect it (and disabled the msg) all these days.

2. From recently, my sound card is not working. If I play any audio applications it hangs. And when I try to restart it later, it hangs while loading the Windows ( btw I have Windows XP Home edition). I will have turn off for some time and then switch on. If that doesnot work will have to start in safe mode and turn off properly and turn on. Again if I try to play any thing else, same story repeats. I tried manythings like installing the emu drivers once again, installing XP once again etc. But nothing worked. I even tried , putting the souncd card ina diff PCI slot. Atlast decided to give it back to EMu as it is still under warranty period. But not so confident on EMU support staff in Singapore. Because when I called them they asked me to send a query on their site. But If I send a query no reply till now. I will be going to Jurong this weekend. Btw if I remove the card from PCI slot and play audio with my onboard card it works perfectly fine.

I suspect that, since EMU 1820 M gets power from CPU, it is pulling more than the limit (HW or SW). Thats why I get the USB error. I even fear it did not ( the audio dock and the sound card) got damaged because of that.

Any similar experiences or if you know of any solns/workaround pls tell me. The EMu staff says from the time I give it to them it may take till 3 weeks to solve the problem basing on the case.

Hi, besides your soundcard being the problem, the other possible culprit may be your motherboard itself. Sometimes troubleshooting the problem may be frustrating.

Easiest way is to take your Emu card back to test. If there's nothing wrong with it (and your drivers are updated), there's a likely chance your motherboard may have problems. That may also explain the USB surge you are getting. There's no reason why the EMU card (being PCI) should interact with the USB port.

OF course, the thing you may need to try out is to reformat your C: drive and do a fresh installation of Windows. If there's problem with the registry, uninstallaing and re-installing the drivers may not solve the problem.

But the USB surge is highly suspicious of a hardware problem - likely the motherboard.
