Are we being taken for a 'ride'? (bus fare woes)

I take the bus to work. Boards at the same busstop and alighting at the one opposite.
It used to cost me $1.11 with EZ-link farecard each way.
But now, its $1.21 to work (16km); and $1.25 back from work (20km). WTF?
And what savings are we talking aboot here?

On Fri, I took a bus from Sim Lim Sq to Upper Thomson Rd and the fare cost $1.21.
I then transferred to another bus (not the feeder service) and alighted one bus-stop away at Sin Ming Ave.
Guess what.....No charge ($0.00 fare) for this trip. The wife confirms this too.

Man I wish they would wake up their XXXXX ideas....
costs are really sky-rocketing and I cant wait for the next GE.
:mad::mad::mad:

You see, the bus operators are commercial companies, and therefore the main goal is to gain maximum profit. So, it is only natural.

The advertisements are there to make it 'nicer'. Think of it as a marketing gimmick to cover up a price hike.

Besides, if you really believed that it is cheaper, think of it this way: it costs a hell lot of money to just replace all the bus directory information in every single bus stop, not to mention upgrading the software to the 'cheaper' fare-by-distance system.

Do you honestly think they are willing to waste that much money if in the end they will not earn it back?

To make you feel better, an official in fact said that 31% of the travelers will experience price hike instead. Maybe, just maybe, you are part of the 31%.

Yeah. I know how they work. I got a 'D' for Fundamentals of Marketing module whilst scoring 'A' on three modules and a 'B' for one.
This was on purpose cos it wasnt because I wasnt paying attention, in fact I was! Its just that I cant make myself to be a 'scheming' bloke.
No offence but IMO, all sales & markerting ppl need to be lined up and shot. :p

If it aint broke, why change it? I say improve on your* standard of service first. Show me and prove to me what you* can achieve. Then we'll talk about raising the fares.

EDIT - *bus companies of course; not you :)

And how does this make me feel better?

Whatever's done, whatever's in the future plans, one thing i know for sure, in general, across the board, everything is going up... so, gear up for it.

Not bad for students like me.
Lets say i need to go to beez from paya lebar.
i'm at aljunied for example. i take a stop to paya lebar mrt.
drop off, take 135, 76, or 43.

usual fare = 43cents + 43cents
now its = 35cents + 10cents.

kewl.

People can complain all they want, it won't change anything. That's Singapore for you. Even if the government asked us to wear compulsory name tags for the rest of your lives majority of the public would do it without question.

Here's some news for you. You won't be a student for your entire life to enjoy such benefits.

yep screwed forever.......our backs exist for the elite to step upon on their way up. suck it up u knaves!!!

The polling booth comes to mind tho.

Yes, we have been telling that to ourselves for decades. But the problem is......

......when the big day comes, a large number of these bravado voters chickened out......giving in to threats (like HDB upgrades, LKY's dooms day scenario, perceived job security, etc.)......or inducement (like kacang-putih rebates and GST offset package, knowing very well they have to pay back the govt 10 times more in future).

And then, they will justify their decision by saying things like "the opposition is too few, or not good enough, yadda yadda". In a few months time, these same people will complain about PAP till kingdom come, and vow to vote the other way in the next election! Well.....you see the pattern now?

:)

How true. You've hit the nail on the head here and those fears are not without merit.

Please correct me if i err here.
For example, take the town council grants for oppositon wards and compare them with grants for the ruling party wards. You'll get the general idea. There was a feature on this in the papers a few weeks back.

I hope the oppositons' young guns will put up a good show for the next GE.

Alas, its always uncontested at where I'm at.
So no chance to make my mark :(

I have yet to see someone ask this question and get straight answers without people starting to rant about the government.

Oh well here's mine anyway. I'm take 2 buses to and from work everyday. I'm paying less.

I think it benefits those who have a really really clear route to where they want to go, for example if ur two bus routes are relative straight lines on the map then yes you'd probably save some money from the stage based ones.

For most of the people I know though, taking bus, train and then another bus to get to where you wanna go often involves circuitous distances on the map, which means pay more... :/ Like when you take a bus to get to an MRT station, take the train to Pioneer and take another bus to NTU island
