Are Ovation Guitars Good?

My budget is about 450 for a semi-acoustic. Using it for casual plug-in and playing at home. Or is there any other recommendations?

always felt that ovations have a very 'plastic' sound. used to be a fan 10 years ago, but since then my ears have grown to understand and appreciate the tonal qualities of various woods... so ovations tend to sound a bit cheapy and plastic-y to me.

why not consider a maestro, for the budget you can get a pretty decent sounding guitar with pickup i think. correct me if i'm wrong.

if its a guitar to throw around at home to play acoustic, don't think the ovation will be a good choice.

Go down city music, play a few and then play a few martins over there.
Go down peninsula, visit maestro and play a few, visit Davis as well and try out their Fina.
You may also wanna go down Bras Basah, Swee Lee to check out their Cort/Ibanez offerings.

Then you decide.

Milkmesto... u have 'felt' very wrong. I own a Ovation Elite, USA made and it's a fantastic guitar. I believe the Ovation you played around with was an Applause or a Celebrity. I've played an Ovation Celebrity Super Shallow. They do sound very different. But then again, Applause and clebrety are nothing compared to a $3000+ Ovation Legend or Elite. Ovation has one of the most balanced pickup systems. They are meant to be play amplified and not unplugged. All the USA made Ovations are using at least AA grade Solid Sitka Spruce. If you really know about tonal woods, u will know the difference between a solid top and a laminated top. Applause and Celebrity uses laminated tops. Therefore, you should not make the conclusion that Ovation is cheap and plasticky if you have never owned one!

Back to the main topic... Dan... If u r looking for a decent guitar, then at about $500 range, forget the Ovations... I doubt u can buy an ovation for that price. However, you still should be able to get a good solid top guitar. If u see one that comes with a pickup, be sure that the wood u r getting in the guitar will not be that good cos 1/2 of what u pay will be going to the pickup. Pickups can be installed later. get your playing skills up to scratch and u'll go further that way...

My advise is for you to get a good solid top guitar with no pickups. When you progressed, then go install any pickup of your choice.

in my opinion, I would say that Ovation guitars in general do not sound good when you are sitting down and playing. however if you are sitting down and listening to a guy playing it, it would sound very nice. its more of a audience kind of guitar. the plug in sound aint too bad as well.

Thanks for all the replies. I liked Ovation cos they are so pretty :) Was at City Music recently and was very tempted to buy the "Made in China" Celebrity for $380. I thot that was cheap and yes, it is using laminated top. Wonders if this is a good choice for a casual player like me. Or should i invest in other brands.

To Seeto -- I prefer guitar with built-in pickup. Lesser hassle hehe :)

Woah... Celebrity is 'Made in China' now? It used to be Applause that is Made in China and Celebrity Made in Korea. Looks like it's really cost cutting now.

For a sub $500 guitar with pickup... easy to find... but a good sub $500 guitar is really hard... I"m not sure about Peninsula or Excelsior area.. but Swee Lee & Ranking Music sure got some decent guitars under $500. I saw a China made OM size spruce top and rosewood & no pickup.... it sounds fantastic...!! but.. it's still outta ur budget of $500... Now I need to convince my wife I need a 4th guitar... wahahah!!
