Are 2nd hand pedals just as good as brand new ones?

I want to get some pedals and effectors but I'm sort of short of money, so I'm planning to get some 2nd stuff. But are they going to be any different from getting a brand new one?

(I'm still a noob so bear with my questions :X)

Of course! 2nd hand pedals are the way to go if you want to save money...

Most pedals are built very well, even mass produced reliable brands such as Boss, Ibanez. They do not spoil easily. The only downside of buying 2nd hand is you may be buying a pedal that has passed through many hands, and its outward appearance has degraded.

The best part about buying 2nd hand is, if you do not like the pedal, or plan to upgrade or for whatever reason you want to get rid of it, you can sell it at a very minimal loss, or sometimes even at a profit! If you were to buy first hand, you WILL have to sell it at a much lower price, and its almost impossible to get a profit, unless in some very special circumstances (e.g. long wait lists)

Comestically, maybe. In terms of workability, maybe too. All depends on how well the previous owner took care of the pedal.

Oh cool so basically it'll sound almost the same as new ones. I'm not really concerned about the appearance of the pedal, cause I need to save money because I'm still a poor student ): Thanks for the answer :D

Yeap, the insides will probably be as good as a new one. Although you have to make sure of every defect, ask the seller properly and everything.
I've never seen a pedal sold at profit compared to retail price. Maybe except Suhr's riot pedal. It doesn't even last two days in the store.

Haha.. You don't want to go there dude.. There are MANY pedals people flip for a HUGE profit. Really you do not want to know about them. I already dropped a hint in my previous post about waiting lists.

Suhr Riot is nothing, they aren't even sold for profits.

If you can get a secondhand pedal that works fine, that's a great deal. But if you get a faulty pedal, you might not be able to tell on the spot, and when you've taken it home and tried it, you might not be able to get your money back. But if it is an honest seller, then it's a great deal. :)

if you are looking for discontinued pedals, 2nd hand is the ONLY way to go. unless you willing to pay a lot more for some New Old Stock pedal at some display unit. Not worth it man.

Haha. Forgive my ignorance...
But i thought the Suhr Riot is pretty much pre booked and you probably can't get a new piece in stores?
