isit always neccessary to tune ur drum set when its new? or only if ur not satisfied with the sound?

For me..... tuning my drum set is always for the sound..... i mean if you like the sound out of the box... then hey.... don't fix what's not broken rite?? dunno if it will distort the wood or hoops though....

Always retune your new kits.
The pre-assembly isn't dedicated and rushed.
As you unscrew the tuning screws, you'll notice some are screwed in more than others.

Hoops won't distort unless you give it more than a drum is supposed to take. There is a tuning method meant to have the increasing pressure (from tuning) distributed evenly across the skin. Skins have a higher chance of distorting which will NOT be good for sound in the long run.

Also, do read the site Paulo posted, it'll do lots.

hi..
well u can go to the remo website for info.

But just for you info, sometimes u can't get the sound u want no matter how well you tune coz of the quality of the skins. Personally, i took about half a day to tune all my drums when i got em last year but the sound was still rather yucky for me. I had to use eq rings for my toms and snare to stop the extensive reverb i disliked.

Eq rings are a rather inexpensive and quick way to give ur drums a more centred tone when hit. As other ppl have said before, the stock skins that come with the drums u buy off the rack are like those guitar strings on guitars in music shops which usually, always get replaced immediately on purchase..

I'm sounding like a noob..... but i don't know what is moongel and how you can use it to tune drums..... I've been playing for 4 yrs and never had to touch the stuff..... i am self taught so don't know much on the technical stuff.....

Usually I tuned my snare drum tight, high pitched... Reasonance skin is tighter than the batter. Major 2nd or Minor 3rd interval between the 2 skins will be ideal... Crisp sounding and a jazzy feel like what joshie stated.. According to my observation, most drummers do that

Toms' batter will be higher than the reasonance. Minor 3rd interval, you will notice the toms sounds fatter and less overtones hence you will not need any muffling gadgets. Very suitable for Jazz if you head is a single ply and also very suitable for rock music..

For a 3 tom setup, I'll tune major 3rd interval from mid tom to hi tom, and Perfect fifth from floor tom to mid tom, no specific pitch... After a while I noticed that the pitch i will tune are usually near E for Hi tom, C for Mid tom and G for floor tom.. making a C major triad, which is very weird for me as i don't use tuner or anything, subconsciously C major triad is a sweet pitch for me...

The other setup, I will not mention further... PM me if you wanna ask more about it...

Lastly for Bass drum, I will tune the reasonance higher than batter by major 3rd to Perfect 4th interval, batter will be pretty low pitch in a sense.. In this way, the bass drum sounds more like a bass drum.. In this way u can either play rock or jazz without retuning them whereas when u tune reasonance lower than batter, it is not very ideal for playing jazz music..

Hope it helps..

moongel is some gelly like substance u stick on the top of your drum skin to absorb he extra vibes.

its not too expensive and can be removed without damaging or leaving any marks.

not sure where to get it though.
