Hi peeps!!! need ur help coz i'm new at this recording thingy...Would like to enquiry about recording a turntable, guitar and keyboard all at the same time to produce a music....what i meant was how can i record live music in my own room...coz before going for mastering its better to listen and make adjustment to our music as not to waste time and money for mastering....is there any device like when we are playing live music and it will record it? really need help from all the experts out there.....thanx...

guitar > pedal > amp > mic > mixer
keyboard > mixer
DJ turn table > mixer

mixer > PC's soundcard > PC recording software like Audacity.

assuming your guitarist has an amp already.

guitar > pedal > amp > mic > mixer
keyboard > mixer
DJ turn table > mixer
mixer > PC's soundcard > PC recording software like Audacity.

[guitar]
mic = $50 - $100 (get 2nd hand or somethin)
xlr cable = $10-$18
4/5 channel mixer = $150 - $250

[keyboard + DJ turntable] check the outputs if using earphone/headphone outs
2x 1/4jack cable or RCA cable etc = $7 to $10+/- each

you'll need more if you're using "stereo" etc.

assuming you already have a PC. then just go to audacity.sourceforge.net to download.

if you're concerned about making wasted-purchases. you can add me at blueprintstudios.org(at)hotmail.com on MSN then I'll give "free consultation" whenever my workload on desk is low/when i'm free.

cheers

foxblinkhope :

guitar>computer recording software is possible but you can't even hear sh*t and needs lots of volume boost later on. instruments need a "preamp" mics need a "preamp". so get at least something like a zoom505II (with a cab simulator) then it should be good to go.

foxblinkhope : ok try to look at this in the most simple point of view possible..

a guitar amp = preamp > speaker cone.

mixer = preamp + EQ + ReverbFX(some don't have) + Panning etc + condenser mic's phantom power supply.

there's a few ways to record guitars :
1) guitar>pedal>amp>mic>preamp>soundcard
2) guitar>fx processor pedal*>soundcard
* = (like those big zoom/boss/line6 pod floorboards) and it's a "preamp" also because they have Gain etc.

3) a) guitar>pedal>amp>mic>mixer Channel#1 (preamp) > soundcard
3) b) " " " " " " " > amp> (D.I Out) > mixer Channel#2 > soundcard

D.I = direct input. / direct line in. whatever. combine the 2 tones etc.

whatever the signal chain is, it will change the sound (for better or for worse) so EXPERIMENT.

10¢ worth

actually im not looking for like a really great studio recording kinda sound. just like get a audible sound can liao. so i do a guitar>amp>sound card then the sound wont be soft liao right? btw i wanna plug my amp to sound card by connecting my earphone port on my amp to the soundcard using cables.

I'm thinking of doing this

Guitar -> amp -> mic -> mic preamp -> soundcard

I have a generic soundcard, should I upgrade it to one that can give me a decent recording?

Any to recommend?

For mic preamp, any small mixers have mic preamp?
I think the behringer 79 dollar one has a phantom power supply.

I know nuts about recording.

foxblinkhope : you're welcome cheers

lightice : to answer your questions in descending order

1) if you got the spare cash , why not ? hehe. but remember this , in audio , your final mix is only as strong as your weakest link. that means if guitar (playing bad)> pedal (settings bad) > amp (settings bad/bad conditioned noisy amp) > mic up (lousy mic / lousy mic up position) > preamp (cheap preamp) > soundcard (cheap/noisy/high latency soundcard etc) > computer (laggy/crashy/unstable pc) . as long as any of these is bad, everything will be dragged down. recommendation ah.. well. Line6 Toneport UX2! haha

2) mixer = preamp + EQ + ReverbFX(some don't have) + Panning etc + condenser mic's phantom power supply.
almost all mixers today have phantom power + preamp.
