Any Good Songwriting Teacher to Recommend?

writesonging?

it cannot be taught.

there's no easy way out.

quit searching and start writing.

the only way you'd learn.

i totally agree, it cannot be taught, only techincal skills and theory can be taught. The more you write and compare, the more u learn

I attended on short course on songwriting about 15 years ago. Agree with turbochicken - can learn about structures. However, those are pretty easy to learn without having to attend formal lessons. There may be books around.

it's a craft and it's a matter of practice.

the more you write, the better you are

juz like playing an instrument

Not really true. If you understand how to use the techniques to develop hooks, you dont have to have a knack for songwriting, although i agree talent and good ears help a great deal!

These tools bring your attention to what's important and how to get your end result - which is to create a song thats catchy and memorable, better still have everyone singing along to it.

How old are you? Come check out our programmes at www.soma.com.sg, you might wanna join our school holiday programmes if ure between the ages of 9 - 18.

SoMA also has a 6 months songwriting programme where students with no music background come in to learn basic harmony and chord progressions, then put that foundation into keyboard skills using the pop/jazz chord approach.
After that, the 3rd and 4th module combines for 10 weeks, where students learn one technique of developing melodic hooks each week, write and record a song at home, and then bring it back for positive criticism from the peers and the trainer. They will then further improve on the song, and learn how to arrange these songs using cakewalk and individual digital workstations at our labs.
Finally, they will pick their 3 best songs, and record their demo CD/portfolio in our recording studio with live musicians =)

Everything you need to know, learn and grow as a professional songwriter, all in 6 months. Feel free to msg me about your songwriting woes, i love to chat and discuss ideas with fellow songwriters.

Oh and we're giving out free ipod nanos for every sign-up by 21st October!

We also have 5 school holiday programmes - which includes a songwriting course of 12 lessons where these tools and techniques of developing melodic hooks, contrasting sections, and other essential elements of songwriting will be taught - all at a special promotional rate only for students this school holidays.
Check out www.soma.com.sg for more details.

I think this is something which either you have or dun have kind of thing. I think listening to lots of different genre of music will help, lyrics wise sometimes depends on what the writer had gone through personally in life,or what he had seen or feel about some topircs or events etc . A sad person can't write a cheerful song rite? :)

Actually the answer is yes

I disagree with most of the above. You should try improvisations first. Once you're improvisation skills are good it will be much easier to come up with a catchy tune especially when you're given a rhythm/progression

For pop improvisations you can take electone lessons

well song writing can be taught actually like lyrical structures and chords progression...but to write a song u need to practise and improvise though...listen to more genres or music and learn from the songs like how lyrics are formed for different moods...the more u write, the better u are..
