Another frustrate rookie guitarist..

Hi guys. This is my first thread on this forum and the thing that has been bothering me is that I've been wondering for a very long long long time on what kind of pedal (single pedal I mean...) should I buy and use cos usually I play heavy rock kind of songs... you know like trivium/a7x/KSE/LOG/metallica/All that remains...etc etc... that kind of efx... i just want as badly as what I hear on the music itself...

To go straight to the point... I'm having these pathetic gears with me...

LTD Viper-50 with EMG's pickups... ----- ( To be honest its 81 at neck and 89 at bridge... i dont know whether it sound terribly suck? what do you think? cos that time was soooo into Metallica....=\ )

Ibanez Tone Blaster 22 watts ------ ( Is this amp good enough ? seriously?)

Had this stupid Zoom 707 II ------ ( I have alot of patience and faith in this shit.. but seriously it suck.. right? unless you guys got the very solution to help me out on this stupid multi-efx....sick and tired of the high treble and tone ... even though I have set it to the minimum... help? )

basically yearh.. thats my blabbering about ... cos.. to be logic .. I can't simply just change my whole set up... I've asked around from my friend.. he said .. I just need to change the multi efx... cos zoom suck so bad...

and now... I'm in a dilemma in searching for a very good solid efx that could rule the next 20 years of my life without changing it... on which how i stated the above...

please guys do help me out on this... I know this is just another typical question from any noob guitarist... but.. hey .. thats what forums are for right..??

please help me... =\

I know to get a very good multi efx for a change.. will be the pod xt's ... doesnt matter the live one.. or the old one... but the problem is BUDGET.. :(

I have like $100 just to get a pedal... i mean a new one... can any of you recommend me ??? please... probably i can break the bank/splash the cash/break the budget limit for abit...with your confidence on your recommendation... :(

can anyone help me on this..? especially the old timers out there..? thanks..

keep rocking guys..

My advice to you is practise, practise and practise...

Its not the gear that makes the music but its the guitarist that responsible for every note and tone. The gears you have are decent enough to start out with. You can definitely get some decent metal tone out of the Zoom, trust me cause I used that particular pedal before in a jam session to rock out to In Flames' melodies with that...

So practise your techniques plus tweak and experiment to get to know your equipment better. No matter what pedal you get, it can't make you a better guitarist. Its how you palm mute, pick, fret the strings, etc.. that plays a more important role in achieving the elsusive "metal" tone.

;)

$100 bucks to make your tone shoot from zero to hero ain't enough boy!!!

Save up some more moolah.. My friend himself saving.. Imagine buying a new axe with upgraded pups WITHOUT AN AMP TO PLAY WITH.. He's willing to wait lah to get a good amp (maybe a Valve Jr)..:mrgreen:

Hi bro, Try plug in direct and use the built in overdrive. Set the overdrive gain at 3/4, treble just before 1/2, mid just after 1/3, bass at 2/3. The sound may not be perfect, but you can start fiddling from there startng with the mid controls. A Boss metalzone pedal would be versatile enough if you can master it. Recently a review of Beta Alvin HM-200 sems to almost match the metalzone and it is under $100 if I'm not wrong.

Hi Bro, seems that your gears all are ok. Which is good enough already. maybe you need someone to teach you how to get the sounds.

LTD Viper-50 with EMG's pickups<- With this guitar and the emg's pickup, its well fine enough with the emgs.

Ibanez Tone Blaster 22 watts<- Well im not saying this amp is good or not, depends on ur effects on how you set your sounds as to liase with ur amp setting. With just couple of settings on this amp, you would not have the sound that you really want. but this amp is already fine enough. Might u consider having more high end amplifiers.. eg, marshall

Had this stupid Zoom 707 II<- I could say this effect is good enough for starters however me still using this effect up till now and have been helping me with gigs a lot.. u need someone to teach u get some sounds and effects setting.

You still could have the sounds u want however not exactly but near exact maybe. With this effect i seldom use the BOOST, ISO/COMP AND CAB. cos this setting make your sound worst, unless u need certain sound to BOOST, ISO/COMP up 1 level. So try find ur sound 1 at a time... and seek some help from ur friend who is experience enough to teach u with the sounds.

Patience helps..

Learn how tweak around your equipments, perhaps the amp and pedal, to get a sound you like and enjoy. Do with what you have first. Practice, practice, practice. Learn new techniques to the guitar. Don't bother about your gear yet. While practicing, save up on money then get better and worth gears.

Hope this helps! :D

p.s Don't be too frustrated. Relax and take a step at a time.

hey there mate... I see.. yearh.. I've tried direct input to the amp itself... at times it sounds nice and at times it sound terribly shit...

I don't know whether its my amp problem.. or my damn guitar ...

That friend of mine also recommends me Behringer V-Tone GDI21 ... he said this efx is value for money... in terms of sounds/tone etc... this is recommended..... true? :S

about the Beta Alvin HM-200 ... where can I purchase it??? or where can I get to hear a sample of its sounds and all... hmm.. thanks buddy..

On what you said about getting knowledge of good sound is probably what I'm looking for ... yaerh.. like I've mentioned above... that friend of mine .. he's good in sound... as in he does all these experimenting efx and having the trial and errors on the amps settings... he was the one who told me that Zoom is shit.. cos of the treble and equalisation thing...

Yearh... straight to the point... I'm lack of sound setting knowledge...

welll if any of you humble guys willing to throw a few good advice on sound settings with aliase on my gears mentioned ...

thanks guys..

welll to be honest, brother...

I've been having this dilemma on sounds setting for the whole of my guitar playing life time.... but i do improve on myself on via trial and error... i search around on the net regarding the zoom 707 II settings.. in the end have to come back to square one...

practicing is always my priority mate.. that should be no problem..

maybe you can judge me through my cover vids at YT...

This one is a cover from Protest the Hero - Blindfold aside

Protest The Hero - Blindfold aside (cover)

guys do judge me on my sounds and all... if you can hear it properly.. cos maybe my bg music is abit loud?

enjoy the vid guys... drop me a comment or two also.. thanks..

Well guys... probably I just don't know how to multi quote you guys... and I have to reply to you individually...

Sorry..

anyway.. if you guys wanna know on how my sounds hears like or even if you guys got the time to see it... here is my main profile at YT

I've like 24 covered vids... and probably on going..... cos I'm stuck back with studies which make me pause for awhile...

My latest video cover.. was back in January...

By the Roadrunners United - In the fire

here it is

and my main profile..

Not to create any conflicts... but my main aim of giving you guys my vid links.. IS NOT TO SHOWBOAT ... but my aim to get other people's opinion on my own damn sound ... which is terribly pathetic... there are comments on people saying my reverb and treble too high and all.. etc... i took these kinds of small comments seriously.. even though they have no knowledge on guitar or what soever...

yearh... i need you guys humble opinions regarding my sound... for the mean time.. im sticking to the shit-zoom-707 II

until i'm fully convinced for a new efx...

till then .. keep posting your feedbacks here guys.. thanks...

P.S
Do drop your comments and ratings on the vids ! If you dont want to its okay.. :)

and yearh.. does soft have only ONE color for text font??? I can only see black as an option.. or should i say.. THE only option.. hmmm..

Rock on guys..

Anyone who is "good in sound" will never dissed a particular brand or model cause that person will know how to make full use of whatever product that is given.

My advice to you is just try tweaking your patches. For a decent "metal tone", if I can recall, the 707II has this "Metal 7th" or something like that, high gain distortion modeling efx. Use that and also tweak the tone settings as well as tweak the EQ parameters till you hear something that you like. From then on select the Cabinet settings to which enhances the tone that you have tweaked. To make it more "evil" sounding ad a tad of reverb to it.

However before you begin tweaking your Zoom, set your amp settings to "neutral" settings where your EQ is all set to 12 o'clock. This to ensure least colorisation of the tone that you are going to set with you Zoom. Also check your gain settings on your amp as well. Make sure you get a clean tone with decent headroom first.

Also like I emphasis before, practise and perfect your playing techniques. I've seen many newbie guitarists whom just blame their bad playing and "sound" to the gears that they have even though they have far more decent gears than to what I started with back then.

Mastering to palm mute, good picking techniques and fretting of strings plays a MAJOR part in achieving that "bone-crushing aural assault".

Good luck!

One comment on the videos you made, the background music is too loud to make out the tone that you have. You might wanna bring down the backing track abit before doing your next video. This will help us to identify your own sound or better still record WITHOUT a backing track!

You have a "natural flair" for guitar playing. Keep it up and practise more. This will make you to an even better guitarist in time to come.

Hi Bro,

Video sounds are not usually accurate as the low ends tend to get filtered out so it is hard to tell accurately from your vid. My hunch is that you may want to reduce or totally cut your reverb on your zoom (not sure if it is possible though).

If you can get good sound from your amp at times, do take note of the settings (inc gain and volume). Since you're using EMG 89 for the bridge, (is this stock?) if you can get someone to help, you may want to send it to check the wiring. It may have been wired out of phase or actively singlecoil. My recommendation if to switch the pickups. 81 at bridge and 89 neck with coil split for EMGSA. Can be costly though.

I'm not a fan of behringer so can't comment. pedalitis is selling a used Boss MD-2 at buy sell. Would probably a better option. Experimentation may be costly though.

You can get Beta Alvin at http://standardvalue.com.sg/store/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=13. Bring your guitar and test it overthere. Friendly people over there. Only one hint, try use the simplest (a.k.a cheapest) amp overthere for testing or you may be confounded with the amp tone instead).

Good luck.

mate one question... hmm where is exactly the location of the store... ? hmm

I have to bring down my own guitar for testing the effect huh...

opps.. that makes 2 questions...

haa..

thanks!

It is at old woodlands interchange (woodlands checkpoint). I would take 856 from Yishun cos I live up here. Not sure how else to get there though. Ranking at Bras Basah may have it but I'm not certain.

Yup, bring your guitar, highly recommended. That is best cost you just want to get acquainted with the pedal not a guitar off the rack and the pedal. Try speaking with Mike at the store about the pickups on your guitar.
