Hi all,
I've been playing the scene in KL since 2003 there are a lot more gigs over there and that's just in KL not to mention all the other states. The first thing I notice is that there is much much less politics there than there are here. There might be some backstabbing but that seems to be more in the club top 40 type of circuit but if you're talking about independent music scene, almost all bands there are friends with each other to the point that they fill/sub in for each other when a bassist for instance has got BGR problems and has to miss a gig of sorts heh.
But seriously, over here I find everyone somehow 'protectionist' oriented. I think a change in mentality is needed to begin with because time and time again I find some bands from Singapore trying to play at a gig in KL but they tend to bring this trait with them. That's why the KL bands find Singapore exports somehow 'stuck up' and that might close a lot of doors for future gigs and such.
I think bands/musicians from Singapore need to look beyond our shores and not limit ourselves to just our small patch of land because after all there is only so much we can do within our borders. Honestly I think all the tips you may find on the internet such as from TAXI, GETSIGNED.COM etc won't work in Singapore because as a country we are too small. If they applied to Singapore they would have worked already. But even the benchmark of success would be nothing compared to what it would be if we applied it in a bigger country.
However, I believe some of those things can be used but individually for your band but take it and go beyond our borders. The problem then is...
Are we brave enough as Singaporeans to give up our day jobs and go into music full time? Cause unless you session for a top artiste who pays your bills, that's courage and determination is exactly what is needed.
Just my two cents.
