alternative tunings vs boss octave pedal

okay heres a scenario. lets say you wanna jam to some heavy metal or maybe hardcore. you have a guitar and a distortion effect (metal zone, mega distortion, whatev..) and you also have an octave pedal.

which would you prefer to use for having that really really thick distortion coated sound? personally i would go for tunings like drop d and drop c. but i heard the boss octave pedal can do much better (i dunno, correct me if im wrong)

thanks!

It never sounds like the real thing. Just a simulation of a note an octave down.

but it does sound like it right? like if were to play an E5 on the 7th fret it would sound as if i played it on the 2nd fret right??

it'd end up sounding like utter mud..if you want the "heaviness" associated with lower tunings just get heavier strings and tune lower. theres no other way about it. octave pedals have their uses, but this isnt one of them in most cases. most cant track chords well either.

if you want to play really slow,grindy,sludge-core like stuff, play single notes with lots of fuzz and an octave pedal will probably work but its an acquired taste really.

btw shredcow sorry im not selling the tonezone7...forgot to reply the PM

Its cool. 8) Discovered that disconnecting the tone pot allowed the Dimarzio New 7 pups to really crunch and sing.

I am more into Passives. Was actually thinking of the Ludgren M7 pup. About $450 and it sounds even better than EMGs on distortion. Meshugga uses them. All passive. Now... to find the cash...

I'm sticking with my Dimarzio New 7 bridge for now... the New 7 neck is very nice, very warm and fat, not too compressed. The bridge version is just... a touch too compressed but the friggin thing is great on clean!

Aye! I wish they had WHITE ones though... my guitar is SOOOOO boring! I need to strip the finish.

hehehe.. you know what I plan to upgrade? 8)

1) Tuners to 6 set of Gotoh Delta Series, ala my S520, 21:1 gear ratio
2) B string tuner to hipshot guitar Xpander, for quick detuning to A.
3) Nut to Tusq or something
4) Bridge to Piezo bridge... *seriously considering*
5) REFRET. I can't stand jumbo frets anymore!!!! Damn Malcom!!! :D
6) Strip it strip it strip it... to natural? Stained red basswood? i dunno...

Now, i need to rob a bank...

haha... interesting... i would fancy the detuna first... i think thats a pretty cool gadget invented... lol... ur mods will cost u hell lota money though

I dunno if I really need the detuner... its expensive, about $120 or so? And I'm AM using a fixed bridge... need to change tunning so fast one meh? Hehehe
