Hey there, before we can help you out, you need to help us to help you by providing more specific information.

Budget? What kind of music do you play? What 'sound' are you trying to achieve?

There's a series of excellent articles on mikedolbear by Dave Bateman that touches on this subject. Can check them out if you like.

Cymbals - The Basics
The inspiration behind these articles is to help younger and less experienced drummers become better acquainted with what may on the surface appear to be an open and shut subject matter. While I don’t profess to know everything on the subject, I hope that over the course of a few articles I can impart some of my knowledge and experience and help others avoid what can be, some expensive mistakes. You will find I refer to certain things quite a lot – this is deliberate and is because they are important contributing factors to the matter at hand.

Cymbals - Part II - Optimising Performance
Like most things on a modern drumkit, the placement and positioning of your instruments is down to personal taste. However, I would like to try and give an indication on how to get the best out of your cymbals by positioning them in the ‘least-wrong’ way. I say this because obviously there is no real correct way to so, just optimum and less optimum. What I am trying to do is give some grounding on which to experiment and so you can find your own happy medium.

Cymbals - Part III - Optimising Performance
In the last part of this series, we’ll look at how to change/ alter the sound of your cymbals, a bit of care and maintenance and what to look for when buying.

and yes my opinion is that you go with someone who knows his cymbal stuff and go test. you learn most that way.

thanks for all the guidance .
went to the links joshie gave.
lotsa sites and description of the cymbals.

i was thinkin of zildjian ZXT?
the set i saw at yamaha....

zildjian ZXT ok... mostly all cymbal is ok, but u must try it!

don worry, go yamaha sit down insist on trying and ask many questions... listen to the sounds and after listening to it many time if u like it and it grow on you then i think its ok to buy it?

If you are looking at ZXT, then check out the Istanbul Samatya Series at Drum Resources. Pay a little bit more ($650) for so much more... 8)

i agree with drum_hobbyist man... not worth paying the amount for ZXTs. Personally I feel that the OLD zbts are way better than the ZXTs. Zildjian's beginner cymbals are dropping in quality. Their ZXTs sound like hardened trashcan lids. The Samatya series sounds WAY better than ZXTs, b8pros or 302/402s.

Threadstarter: what's your budget? have you checked out 2nd hand cymbals yet? personally i feel its a waste of money if you buy a set of beginner/intermediate level cymbals, then upgrade to pro cymbals in the future. might as well get them piece by piece. oh and what kind of music do u play? that would narrow the cymbals down a little

aye, i forgot... Which one istanbul's entry level one?? issit the samatya or the mehmets???

if i remember correctly, the lady at DR said that the samayta series is the lower end of istanbuls yet they sounded great.

So if the samatya series is their lower end, u may wanna try out the mehmets cymbal pack ezimusic brings in, for 650 u get ride, crash and HH.

my bad, its the samatya series too. check em out at DRumsresources, play as loud as u can.. haha

yah man i love his little "studio" lah. i went there to enquire about mehmet hats and splashes and ended up admiring his samatyas on his hipgig haha... damn cool sia.

btw the samatya series is very nice.. the hats are very crisp and not metallic like most beginner cymbals.

i'd recommend that to anybody who wants a beginner set.

isit ok to mix diff cymbals together (like sabian and zidjidans together)? cuz im prolly buying the k custom dark and hhx hihats?

why not? you're not being endorsed by either sabian or zildjian to play their cymbals AND THEIR CYMBALS alone are you?

mixing and matching is perfectly fine. as long as you like the sound you get from the cymbals, anything goes.

but by mixing do you mean the hats? sabian top hat and zildjian bottom hat?

if so, here's a cookie for you. that's an excellent way to find new sounds. 8)

wah cookie.... i also want!!

anyway, since this is abut cymbals.. just wanna ask..
any of you guys ever played cymbals inverted??
hmm.. i think most prolly splashes inverted on top of you 16" and above cymbals...

wondering how wud they souns like...
is it still the same as per normal playing?
