Hi there,
I need some advice.
I just bought a Variax acoustic 700. The guitar can be powered via 6 AA batteries or a seperate DI (XPS-AB Footswitch via stereo TRS 1/4" cable).
The XPS-AB footswitch is able to switch between 2 output types; 1/4" and XLR output. So, i had the idea to connect my tuner to the 1/4" output and use the XLR output as my main out. At the same time using this as a "mute" function which I need when I'm on stage.
I tried running the XPS-AB footswitch through to the main house system last Saturday and tried "mute" my guitar. Had a loud pop sound whenever I switched between the outputs. Drew many stares from the sound guys.
Previously with other guitars I would use this configuration:
Ac. Guitar > Volume pedal(tuner from tuner output) > DI > FOH/Monitors
But with this guitar I want to power the guitar using the XPS-AB footswitch. So my confirguration has to start like this:
Variax Acoustic 700 > XPS-AB > FOH/Monitors
So my questions are:
1. Can I put a volume pedal before the XPS-AB and still be able to power the guitar using stereo TRS cables?
(eg. Variax Ac. -- TRS 1/4"--> Volume pedal(tuner from tuner output) -- TRS 1/4"--> XPS-AB -- XLR--> FOH/Monitors)
2. If the above is not possible, then is there any pedal or configuration that can allow me to cut my guitar signal before the DI without causing any pops and crackles through the main output? (At the same time still able to power the guitar via the XPS-AB. This is in the case i need to unplug my guitar halfway through the set.
Reason why I haven't "field tested" it yet, is because I dont wana fry anything. Hoping that someone that has some prior experience can shed some light before I go ahead and try it out..
I did consider using an A/B switch pedal but that would cut off signal from the XPS-AB to the Variax Ac. Thus, no power.
Note: I know to some purists volume pedals "suck tone" but I use it purely for practical reasons when playing live.
