Acoustic Blues in Bukit Timah

Hi all,

For the month of April, Anjana will be busy with her exams and thesis so she won't be at The Old Brown Shoe gig. However, we will have Louis on harmonica and vocals, and both of us go back a long way from since I joined my first blues band. On that note, more sordid details are on my new personal homepage at http://pachome2.pacific.net.sg/~victorchen/index.html where the dirty linen of my musical history is aired for the morbid curiosity of those who are so inclined.

This will be a groundbreaking gig as we will be experimenting with electric instruments in a duo format - both of us are going to be playing through amplifiers for that lo-fi, low-down, stomp-your-feet-and-chug-your-beer honking gutbucket blues sound. If you would like to be a part of this momentous moment, then head on down to The Old Brown Shoe on April 25, where we will start raising a racket from 2045hrs. We'll see you then.

Cheers
Victor

Hi folks,

Hope all is well with you so far, amidst all the ado about swine flu and Singapore's very own version of Girls Gone Wild: Suntec City Showdown.

Anjana will be returning this month, having concluded her academic pursuits until she decides to inflict upon herself the horrors of post-graduate studies. Louis and I had a great gig last month and will return, making that 2 blues gigs in May at The Old Brown Shoe on the following days:

Malted Milk (Anjana and I): 16 May 2030hrs

Medium Rare (Louis and I): 30 May 2030hrs

So there you have it, downhome acoustic blues with Malted Milk and gutbucket electrified blues with Medium Rare. Don't forget your dose of hops-and-malt-flavoured disinfectant to guard against swine flu so that you can eat delicious pork cutlets or sausages without fear.

Cheers,
Victor

Hi all,

Due to personal schedules, Medium Rare will not be playing this month but Malted Milk is still on at The Old Brown Shoe (619F Bukit Timah Rd, next to Coronation Plaza) on Saturday 20th June, starting at 2030hrs.

Cheers

Hi all,

Due to the heavy schedule of rugby matches to be screened at The Old Brown Shoe this Saturday, Malted Milk will not be playing. We will be back in July, so watch this space!

Hi folks!

Hope everyone is alright, with the flu going around and having to be probed with thermometers everywhere. The clusters identified so far are schools, churches and army camps so it seems like pubs are still relatively safe. In any case, I'm pretty sure most of us would rather be in a pub than a school/church/army camp on a Saturday night anyway. If not, then good luck with your next game of solitaire...

And, these are the Saturday nights to be at The Old Brown Shoe:

11th July: Malted Milk
25th July: Medium Rare

Both gigs start at 2030hrs, so make an evening of it with a hearty meal and stiff brewskies. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then surely a pint of cider must be good for you, yah?

Cheers,
Victor

Hey folks,

This Saturdays gig has been brought forward to 7pm due to a live rugby match telecast. See you there!

Regards,
Victor

Thanks to the great support from all of you over the years (yeap it's been that long since we started) we've got a bumper crop of gigs lined up at The Old Brown Shoe this month:

1st : Medium Rare 1900hrs
8th : Malted Milk 1900hrs
15th : Malted Milk 2030hrs
29th : Medium Rare 2030hrs

Cheers,
Victor

Hi folks,

Starhub has yet again pulled a Temasek Holdings on us at the last minute and changed their mind about the rugby telecast, thus pushing back our gig at The Old Brown Shoe this Saturday to 2030hrs. From the looks of it this flip-flopping will be a regular thing, but I hate being bombarded with emails and as such am loathe to send out repeated emails every time this happens.

From now on, I will put up the gig timings at http://pachome2.pacific.net.sg/~victorchen/gigs.html and hopefully keep the emails to once a month, just to let you know which days we're scheduled for. If you're planning to head down, you can check the website for the latest timings. My apologies for the recent rash of emails, and if any of you would rather not receive them just let me know.

Cheers,
Victor

Hi folks,

Thanks to the great support we've received from all of you in our first few gigs of August, we will be playing all four Saturdays in September with the following line-ups:

5th Sept: Malted Milk
12th Sept: Medium Rare
19th Sept: Malted Milk
26th Sept: Malted Milk

This might sound like some highfalutin' ideal of a vibrant blues scene that needs to be brought back to Earth, but with your continued support I think we can keep the small little scene we have sustainable. Our last gig for this month is this Sat with Medium Rare, where Louis and I get to indulge ourselves with some hard-hitting harmonica-driven Chicago blues, fuelled by fine Scottish malts and satisfying English pub grub. That's our small contribution to a harmonious multi-cultural society, see you then!

Cheers,
Victor

Victor, your cover of Rollin' N Tumblin' with Anjana is truly incredible. Where can I learn to play slide guitar like that?

Thanks for the kind words! There's a lot more on the subject on the internet and youtube these days than when I first started messing around. Eric Clapton's Unplugged is a good place to start, there's tabs somewhere on the internet I believe. Or buy the book. Apart from that it's listening and practise.

Hi folks,

As Singapore gears up for the F1 weekend, we here at Malted Milk are gearing up for a blues weekend. Unless you are Felipe Massa's replacement, you're probably not going to get through traffic in town so you might want to consider a night out at Bukit Timah instead at The Old Brown Shoe. The F1 happenings will also be screened so you can still keep up with what's going on, though it will be accompanied by blues for the the first couple of laps, which might make for an interesting vaudeville-like experience from a Charlie Chaplin film.

At the very least, I can assure you that any spectacular crash incidents during our gig are purely accidental. Really.

In any case, we've arranged our dates for Oct as follows:

Oct 3,10,24: Malted Milk

Oct 17: Medium Rare

Hope to see you then!

Cheers,
Victor

21st Nov will herald the inaugural edition of The Black Room Sessions at The Old Brown Shoe, where I will be singing (*gulp*) and playing solo for 2 sets of acoustic blues. The setlist will draw from some of the Malted Milk and Medium Rare repertoire, but will include more slide guitar on songs from Robert Johnson, Tampa Red and the like. I will also be playing some of my own songs, since no one else wants to play them.

14th and 28th Nov will feature Medium Rare. These 3 gigs will start at 2030 hrs.

As always, do check the gig listings at http://pachome2.pacific.net.sg/~victorchen/gigs.html for any changes.

Cheers,
Victor

Hi folks,

The X'mas season approaches and even though there's no snow, the recent weather still seems highly-conducive for the consumption of winter-warmers. I highly recommend the Scottish version and seeing how they have some of the harshest weather (as well as football managers), they've got to be doing something right. Though Singapore weather will probably not be approaching that kind of climate anywhere in the near future, it would be most prudent to take precautions in the true-blue Singaporean kiasu spirit. The Old Brown Shoe stocks a respectable selection of Scottish remedies and in any case, they're probably a lot more fun than H1N1 flu jabs.

Musical accompaniment will be provided on the following days:

5th Dec: Medium Rare (Louis and Victor)

12th Dec: The Black Room Sessions with Victor Chen

Have lots of festive fun and we'll see you next year.

Cheers,
Victor
