Acoustic Blues in Bukit Timah

Hi softies,

I play with another singer as an acoustic blues duo called Malted Milk, and we do a monthly gig at The Old Brown Shoe, an English-style pub in the row of shophouses next to Coronation Plaza. We've been doing this gig for a few months already, but this is the first time I'm trying my luck to publicise it here. For March, we're playing on the 24th.

Some of you may know us as A Mess of Blues from the Acoustic:Stripped competition held at Wala and Balaclava. It's just a name change though, everything else is still the same. We play 2 sets starting from 9pm or so, and the chef sets up a BBQ grill just outside.

Blues, BBQ and beer. Bingo. 8)

Cheers
Victor

Hi folks it's me again.

This month there'll be more acoustic blues at 2 venues:

22nd Apr - Esplanade Waterfront: Malted Milk will be doing 2 sets starting from 1930. Bring your own booze!

28th Apr - Old Brown Shoe: Our singer Anjana is not available for this gig, so I'll be doing it with Louis on double bass and share vocal duties with him. Acoustic guitar and double bass, it's a blues combo not frequently heard in Singapore as opposed to your usual Strat-shootout over a huge drum kit and 1000W bass amp. Give your ears a rest and your liver a workout!

Cheers
Victor

i remember these guys!

i think they won the competition at wala's. anjana's fantastic man. is old brown shoe...friendly to pple below 21? hahahah.

i wanna go check it out.

hey dude, U the guitar player who replaced Greg in Melt?

Good on ya ....

Regards to Mel & Maurice...

Hi blueshoes,

Old brown shoe is an English-style pub located in a residential area, so it's pretty much a friendly neighbourhood kind of hangout. I don't see any problems with under-21s. Yeap, we're the guys from Wala Wala :D

fgl, I'm not playing with Melt but Greg and Maurice are the ones who put us through to the owner. I haven't heard from them in a long while either, I don't recall seeing them play at Old Brown Shoe recently.

Cheers
Victor

Now this is something I must check out - I get Saturdays off and I'm always lookin for a good gig to go to - instead of bloody EPL football everywhere:)

Alright IrishGerry hope to see you there! It IS an English-style pub so there will still be bloody EPL on the telly (unless there's rugby), but we'll be providing the OST for it.

Hi folks,

I'd forgotten about this thread, time to bring it back from the dead. We've taken a year-long break while I went overseas for studies and we're back at The Old Brown Shoe (619F Bukit Timah Rd) this Sat 24th Jan. Great English-style food, good range of decent beers, right next to Coronation Plaza.

Malted Milk is Anjana on vocals, myself on guitar. Our setlist includes Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Lightning Hopkins, bit of Johnny Cash and some surprises. Come and say hi!

Regards,
Victor

hi.... assume you'll be playing there every Saturday? or is it just this weekend ? I live on bukit timah so would love to drop by.

Hmmm lets see.....

1.Maurice and Mel still play at OBS every 2nd friday with Chris Toh on gtr. I fill in very occasionally, including this friday.

2.Chris replaced me in Melt

3. I went back to Australia for the bulk of 07 and half of 08 before returning in June 08

4. I am playing in some other combos including Stingy Lil who are doing the PoW on Jan 26th, Australia Day.

5. Pete always trying to get me down to the Shoe when Vic plays, have nothing on this sat so no better time to come down and listen to the blues master!

For the rest, this is about the most pure blues you'll see around this part of the world and Victor is as good at what he does as anyone in the world. Should be playing big theatres rather than little pubs. You owe it to yourself to come check him out!

Hey fellas, we usually start at 9 or so. We do this once a month or so and its scheduled on a month to month basis based on our own schedules and that of the Shoe.

I keep an email list going to send out our dates, you can PM me your email if you like. Otherwise I'll post it in this thread as well. For a start, our next gig at OBS is on Feb 7, so pencil it in!

On occasion we also have some of our friends from the incestuously small blues scene drop by with harmonicas to raise more racket than we usually do.

Greg: Thanks for the props! Didn't know you were back in SG, would be good to catch up!

subhro: Wah, your avatar more hardcore than mine!

Cheers,
Victor

yeah Greg - so U back from down under permanently?

hahah I still remember the awesome NYE gig we did together a few years back ..

haha depends on your definition of permanently ;)

Trying to motivate some of the lads to come see you play at Yello Jello one friday night....we will get there one of these days!

A nasty flu bug has been reported to be going around in this crazy weather of back-to-back rain and sunshine. Your immune systems will need much strengthening to resist the merciless assault of germs and microbes and you are encouraged to increase your intake of high-strength anti-bacterial solution made from yeast and hops. Malted Milk will be leading by example on Mar 14 at The Old Brown Shoe, starting from 2030hrs.

As always, the ingestion of this solution is to be accompanied with acoustic blues so as to increase its effectiveness. However, if taken on an empty stomach the solution may have side effects ranging from random acts of poor judgement to unintended children, hence pub grub is highly recommended. You have been warned.

Nice! So there's a blues scene in Singapore...

Just a quick question, are there any other groups playing in Old Brown Shoe aside from Malted Milk? Do they play blues, as well?

TIA!

Hi Izzy,

There is music on Fri/Sat nights, playing jazz/rock/pop stuff. They don't have a website, so your best bet is to pop down and check the poster on the wall for the other gigs.

Cheers
Victor
