For me its blending speed and feel, and musicality? Well, I'll say what I usually tell anyone, without technicality that you can express yourself through, your musicality is nothing.

Speed ain't everything la.

IMO, having control and feel impresses more than having speed. To me, its quite a different form of expression which is more or less an acquired taste.

Shredding is easy given you have enough practise, but slower stuffs.. Need more control and feel to bring out the emotions and message across.

Can shred la, but, its like the same old and typical, unless I manage to break through this creative barrier. If not, its pretty much boring huh? Damn.

Its nice to alternative between arpeggios and shredding, actually. Usually when I solo I alternate. Shredding is cool, but not excessively... When guitarists play 3 minutes straight of non-stop shredding, usually I don't watch to the end. But if they combine both, I like!

i can shread though sometimes it kinda gets 'uncomfortable'

in my honest opinion,
the 'shred' era is long gone...

i prefer technicality in play

True that speed isn't everything and melody is king but being able to do it makes you more versatile. thats like having one more weapon in your arsenal when having to do leads.
BUT SOMETIMES YOU JUST WANNA MELT SOME FACES!!!!

\m/

you know, if shredding could really melt some faces.

ill abuse the power.
ill melt all those irritating minah and mats faces...

but ill just half melt it. let them suffer for the rest of their life with melted saggy faces..

hahaha. i can't shred for nuts too. but i feel that with the ability to shred you'll have a wider variety of techniques to infuse into your music. (:

Being able to play fast gives you more control over your timing. You may not necessarily prefer to play fast, but being able to do so, offers you more options to ways of playing a song. For example, you may want to spice up a slow tempo song by introducing a few bars of thirty-secondth notes, etc...

Shredding is like shitting.

You must have a reason to do it. And when you do it, please find a good spot to do so. Too much is no good - it makes you and possibly others feel sickly. None at all and you'll soon find that you will have issues.

haha! But heh, there's quite some truth in there. And I forgot to mention that there's good shred and bad shred.

Wow you sure sound good. Can you post a video? I would love to learn a thing or two from you.

i find some people too often relate shredding to being at the top of the mountain. much like slapping and popping is to playing the bass.

too often done with technical proficiency to boost ego.. but with zero feel.

i agree with tidesofblood.

i have always been more of a feel player. having good technique is important and i can appreciate shredding. but when the feel is gone, when the music has no soul, i dont think it's worth it. haha
