a little question to ponder on...

Hey SOFTies,

I've been thrown with the following two statements by two very different and very talented (for our youthful age) musicians,

1 - "buy a really good guitar and you won't have to change any part of it, cheap guitars are no point modifying as they will still be bad"

2 - "buy a cheap guitar and modify it to become very good, buy expansive guitar to mod wastes money cause the same can be achieved at a lot less cost"

I'd LIKE to agree with both statements, but I'd like to see which statement would you guys rather follow =)

artwork, wood grades, woodgrain designs eg flame/quilt,workmanship such as binding and unique inlays, type of wood used, quality control issues
some stuff just can't be modded away

but end of the day i'll simply get whatever feels good to me
mods i think for me at the very most i'll change pickups?? both my axes are still stock parts :)

i bought costly instruments before but i still mod them, some of my budget guitars are as good as they are out of the box- no mods necessary. so i guess 1 & 2 aren't valid...

If you change guitars like you change underwear, then no point modding/upgrading. Buyers for used guitars usually don't care for mods/upgrades and wouldn't pay more for it. If you're keeping your guitar for a long time, then do whatever you want with it.

For me, I prefer to get a quality mid-price guitar (regardless of brand) with good resonant and playability, and then mod/upgrade the hell out of it. And the results are usually quite pleasing as my guitar would end up sounding like an instrument 2-3 times its price. Because of this, I find the modding and upgrading very worthwhile. However, I would avoid cheap/budget guitars because from my experience they would still feel cheap and not necessarily sound better despite all the upgrades.

5. Buy anything that allow user to create original music in physical format and not just admiring the beauty of the instrument playing covers like jerking off to playboy and thinking its the hottest sex partner one can ever have

2 things i always look for in a guitar.....Tone and Playability. This is unique to everyone.
To me Tone encompasses the following:- Guitar Wood and its combination, Clarity of notes, Set neck or Bolt on neck, Fixed Bridge or Suspend Bridge , Pickups and electronic used (250K Pots vs 500K Pots vs 550K Pots.....Bumblebee Capacitor, PIO Capacitor, Aluminium Foil PIO Capacitor)...etc etc
Playability encompasses the Neck size, Neck profile, Frets (Medium Jumbo vs Jumbo vs XJ), Neck finishes and most important - making sure the neck is straight and if not, able to adjust.

So for thats my criterion in getting a guitar. Of coz it is difficult to get all those......but if the majority in a guitar fits what i have in mind, i would get it still then upgrade it.....like fret upgrade to Jumbo or Electronics upgrade with PIO capacitor, Treble Bleed the guitar. Cheers

Tone is subjective. I know friends who prefer the sound of a Timbre strat (which is amazing for the price, not dissing it whatsoever) over that of a Fender MIA piece that to me sounds waaaaay better.

Hey guys! nice replies and all the add on "rules" xD

for me, I've thought about it. I'll buy whatever feels good and then if the tone is not what I'm looking for then I'll upgrade it. If its still not what i'm looking for, sell cheap.

But if a good deal comes up then i just might not mind spending a little more for it. (i.e. not $3k, somewhere along $1k+)

More thoughts about this topic are welcome =D
