A Chatbox for this forum?

I find some threads veering terribly off-course.
I'm quite sure the idea of a chatbox has been mulled over before; it would help to confine irrelevant small-talk to where they belong.

perhaps we dont really need a chatbox.
would be rather hard if different topics came in 863423 directions.

perhaps we could use the features already present?
eg, groups.

:)

that would be an alternative too.
The key is to fully utilize those groups as a concerted effort to prevent more threads from going off tangent.

a chatbox would also probably be hogged by infamous individuals as well. We dont want that do we?

hmm im not sure but im using chatango on my blog,
its way better than the usual tagboxes.
its refreshes automatically when someone leaves a message.

ah not to worry, chatango is way better. Im not sure how to give you a preview of it.
im not sure if im allowed to embedded it here. so ill just give you a pic of it.

its the colour and size are adjustable.
and you can open it to a new window.
no refreshing is needed in order to see a new message.

and if james do choose to set it up.
he will have access to block users if things get out of hand.

A SOFT IRC channel would cater to all the social hunger evident here, since the numbers are in the hundreds' range. You can get on a flamewar every second if so desired. No money charged to Mr James, no government, no IDA, no MDA, no CID, no ID, no NRIC, hell, I can even donate a custom made-in-Python SOFTBOT that speaks like Mr James or the various famous characters here when the kids get too retarded.

Anyone can create an IRC chat group (channel) on any network (server). While I was at it I opened one a while ago: #soft on irc.rizon.net so join up if you like. If not, create your own - like #kakinangs or something

I'm normally over at irc.freenode.net on Linux and (audio) software matters but that's about it, so the choice of rizon (it's apparently popular for anime) as the network is purely random.

And uhh..I had that reserved (registered), so it stays for 30 days. If nobody shows up, it'll be gone but can be created again if the name isn't taken.

Yes, not many people (aside from the software, services and support community) still use IRC, except Otakus downloading Anime. But in the old days, even the young ones used to. I remember there was a local Metal music channel some years ago which used to be quite active.

It depends on how many people are involved. If we're talking a few, IM conversation is good enough. Microsoft's official client will really suffer after a large number of contacts are added, which will in turn make your computer suffer, and then you suffer. You can get a lightweight client, but I'm not sure the MSN protocol can handle 10s of connections smoothly.

If you say more than 50 individuals, I'd recommend chatboxes like Chatango. The downside is it's hard to keep up with the topic since the box widget itself tends to be very compact in size. In the hundreds' range, IRC is always the best route because of that. It's also better due to the freedom. Rules are set only by the channel. You can mask your domain and get away with small murder (don't need to understand, just know).

I have to agree with what you say. but on reference to

=gutturalpiss

you do know that chatango can be resized? futher more and it can be opened in a new window which can be maximised?

For now, we will not be implementing the Chat function cos it is for smaller group discussion. If that is the case, those who like to chit chat should log on to MSN to chat.

* Gentle reminder, pls do not use the forum as a CHAT. Use PM to correspond privately.
