http://www.progarchives.com/

Practically almost everything you need to know.........anyways for starters here's a list of classic works from this wonderful time in music when pushing boundaries whilst still making enjoyable musick was the popular norm!!!

King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Herbie Hancock - Sextant
Yes - Fragile
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Can - Tago Mago
Camel - Moonmadness
Weather Report - Tale Spinnin'
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Terje Rypdal - Waves
Soft Machine - Third

there's so so so much more but i'll stop here..............anyone who likes Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool etc shld do well to explore this essential period!!!

king crimson
robert fripp-the godfather of avant garde guitarists

forgotten his tuning style but its not standard
a big influence on the calfornia guitar trio-he taught all of them

to fripp, guitar playing is not a hobby or work-its a religion

i quite like mahavishnu and miles davis. TS Video or something like that was selling a bunch of DVDs and miles one was one of em. damn enlightening man.

bro sub

yah bro, adrian belew

further reincarnations of king crimson do have Belew in Fripp's outfit.
there are wonderful pioneering musicians but what i can't understand is that their song titles were kinda weird

Elephant talk and there's 1 with a very weird long title I can't remember

that'll be 80s onwards........and Belew is now as essential to KC as Fripp, being the main lyricist and songwriter. Get a hold of Discipline and Thrak to have a good sense of post-70s Crimson.

I'm for Bitches' Brew, Mahavishnu, Weather Report, Return to Forever. These are the 70's fusion stuff that I listen to. Of course there's a lot more. But I'm listening to more modern stuff like Alain Caron, Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny. Of course a lot of Jaco's works. Jap Fusion like Casiopea and T-Square. Brit 80's Fusion Level 42.

Rare to find a fusion lover here in Singapore. Who even listens to people like Jaco, Wayne Shorter, late Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Jazz bassist here. =D Pleased to meet you

hahah there probably are a lot more of us than we think, just they don't turn up here!!!

to me prog rock and jazz fusion go hand in hand plus they did kinda develop in tandem and also influenced each other. Listen to Return Forever's Romantic Warrior or Mahavishnu's first 2 albums and tell me they ain't also prog rock? King Crimson's Lizard album is practically jazz rock........

i'm no into the 'modern' fusion, more like artists who are influenced by fusion and make it part of their sound, esp bands like Tortoise (the godz!!!).........

Hahaz... "Modern" fusion. I meant it more as people playing fusion nowadays... Not just 70's. =D Actually I've been looking around. Desperately. Haha.

When I went to Pat Metheny's Concert 2 years back there was a person sitting next to me who could name every song Pat Metheny was going to play and knew exactly what to expect. Devotion to it man... Even when Pat Metheny touched his not-so-mainstream pieces.

I know prog rock developed in tandem with jazz fusion. Someone had said it quite accurately that prog rock was more of rock finds jazz, whereas jazz fusion is jazz finds rock. =D

my bro was a prog rock biggest fanboy. he would buy em box sets and study those "family" tree of who and who played with who and who on which and what album.

A few other groups I really like....

Porcupine Tree,tribal tech,shawn lane+jonas hellborg,vital tech tones....

nice to see camel fans around.....

check out these great modern works of prog n' fusion!!!

The Observatory - A Far Cry From Here (easily give Porcupine Tree & Radiohead a good run fer da money)

Tortoise - TNT / Standards / It's All Around You (the tr00 kings of postrock's most fusion-tastic werks)

Supersilent - 6 / 7 dvd (improvised music never rocked/progged/fused so damn well!!!)

this genre sounds interesting..

used to listen to 1 or 2 songs by yes..not bad at all..

can anyone recommend more progressive rock group of the 70s...

and why is it called progressive rock??..

these are the biggest and most famous prog rock bands of the 70s:

King Crimson
Yes
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd

then you have the second tier & some 'weirder' ones:

Camel
Caravan
Gentle Giant
Hatfield & The North
Soft Machine (which later became more jazz fusion)
Gong

in my very first post i mentioned this super site essential for understanding wat prog and fusion is, so enjoy!!!

www.progarchives.com

people shld get themselves a copy of the Miles Davis dvd Electric Miles:Different Kind Of Blue where there are interviews and music dedications from ppl like Santana and those who played w Miles' electric bands of the 70s (Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Chick Corea, Keith Jarret, Airto Moreira etc). Touching and heartfelt esp Herbie's Fender Rhodes dedication at the end of the documentary film prpoer.

Also included is the full historic 38min set by the electric Miles band at Isle of Wight festival in 1970. Talk abt improv-fusion power and beauty!!!

A serious must to get into the heart of all things fusion............
