2:3, 3:2, Clave, Cáscara & Timbales

i not too good with these but, the 3 2 or 2 3 clave is wat the latin rhythm is based on. sort of like in western music where it's the 2 and 4.

i was thought tht u can play tht clave pattern on top of all the cuban and brazillian rhythms like the samba the bion and the songo.
ie the feet liking the samba and the hands or left hand playing the clave.
alot of new orleans music is based on the clave as well, second line and such. there are also funk grooves tht imply the clave. listen to the meters with zigaboo modeliste.

ceatano veloso the singer from brazil is gd to listen to as well.

sori man i can play a cascara rhythm but i'm unsure as to its characteristics

oh sori forgot to mention, caravan by chick corea with weckl playing. his tom groove is a psuedo cascara. cascaras to the best of my knowledge are often 2 bar grooves

Hmm, actually, I think it's a different concept, from what I've read. But from what I understand right now, 3:2, in the context of a clave, actually means "Three notes in the first bar, followed by two notes in the second bar", not "Three over two".

Cascara also appears to refer to a specific rhythm. Lol, maybe I'm wrong, we can figure this out.

I've found some material, I'll post up more of the transcripts later.

Cool, I'll checkout Caravan again.

oh yah man thts wat i meant by 3 2
the notes fall on 1 2n and 4 next bar 2 and 3

sori academically latin i'm not too fantastic i didn't take the time to understand the concepts.

yah man i may be a specific ryhthm i'm not sure really.

speaking of clave, i was surprised by the amount of people maintaining a left foot clave during parts of their solos during the drumfest semis.

looks like it's fast becoming a "standard" in soloing!

It has always been argued as to whether the clave is a one or two bar rhythm. It all now depends on the composer and arranger... how he or she wants to write the music. A clave pattern can be written as a one bar pattern or 2 bar pattern.

Cascara means "shell". Becos it is a rhythm that is typically played on the shell of the timbales. Since all the Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms are based on the clave, the cascara fits perfectly over the clave....so in other words, the cascara is a rhythmic pattern that can be written over one or two bars depending on how the clave is written.

Kekekekeke...Alvin just taught me this on Saturday...because of my Bossa thing in Jazz...the 2:3 & 3:2 thing.....now at least I know what you all are talking about....yes.

i feel its much more impt to understand the clave now because, from my part of understanding, the building of afro cuban and latin grooves is all base around all the claves be it 3:2 clave, Son clave, rumba clave, 6/8 clave, its like a standard now haha, the clave system is also good to know because its also a good start to build solos around it and its damn amazing to hear how its sounds, people who understand the clave work wonders around it and i believe it is a must know for all drummers, its not something that force you to learn more, its something that will become a powerful weapon when you come out and show yourself. Grooves now also work around the clave, haha, you name it its one of the very origin of rhythms. ha just my opinion.
