Presented by the Esplanade, Aging Youth Productions’ event “We Came Down From The North Again” will feature the fresh new bands from our neighbouring country, Malaysia, performing along with the veterans and fan favourites. The musical genres of the bands stretch the gamut from retro rock to indie electronica. It’d be a showcase of very diverse Malaysian musical acts.

1. Friday 3 October 2008

a. Silent Scenery - 7:30pm

The band started as an acoustic singer-songwriter project. Silent Scenery plays soft, melodic tunes with intense lyrics and humming vocals. In the early days, bands like Smashing Pumpkins,Nirvana, and Radiohead heavily influenced frontman Kit, but right after Kit got inspired by bands like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, he decided to form a band that play something that
combines the elements of his early and later influences.

In 2007, the project turned into a complete band. Silent Scenery has just released their debut mini album 'When We Escape From The Moonlight'.

b. Reza Salleh - 8:45pm

Owing much of his young singing career to the Seattle sounds of Nirvana, the rap-rock edge of Rage Against the Machine, the vocal stylings of Black American vocalists, and a whole list of other musical influences, Reza Salleh performs music which is a mish-mash of elements drawn from such influences.

c. Lightcraft - 10:00pm

Formerly known as Parallel Lines, Lightcraft comprises of 5 very decent-looking and living lads who, under different circumstances, met and decided to form a band. They make melancholic, catchy indie tunes that are mostly influenced by British indie bands (and some non-Brit indie bands as well). They released an EP during the tail-end of 2006, The Modern Seasons. And now, they have just released their debut album 'Losing Northern Lights' which consists of 10 deliciously melancholic songs.

2. Saturday 4 October 2008

a. Citizens Of Icecream - 7:30pm

Attributing a year and a half with Malaysian record label Soundscape Records as bringing great growth to the band, Citizens of Icecream, which is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia craft their music as a sonic environment where audiences are invited to come in and dream.

b. Slunk - 8:45pm

Slunk is a 5 piece experimental-rock band. Although their genre of music is still very much debatable, they have come to be known for their unique blend of melody, distortion, groove and ambient soundscapes live on stage.

Slunk's music is a journey of dreamy guitars and melodic basslines into aggressive passages and pumping beats, all blended together by spacey sound effects ranging from sampled guitar parts and spoken word to bleeps and swooshes.

c. furniture - 10:00pm

At every turn, furniture attempts to strike that elusive balance between bold invention and comforting familiarity in its music. Described variously as post-rock, shoegaze and avant-pop, the band never strays far from being artful, honest, sweeping and emotional. Having played major regional music festivals, furniture is currently writing new material and previewing them at their upcoming shows.

3. Sunday 5 October 2008

a. Jerome Kugan - 7:30pm

Jerome sings and plays guitar, shakers and sometimes has a laptop as his band. He is one-third of Troubadours Enterprise, a company that organises singer songwriter gigs around KL, including KL Sing Song. The other two thirds are singer songwriters Azmyl Yunor and Tan Sei Hon. He has just released his solo debut album entitled Songs For A Shadow in April 2008.

b. Alaling & The Kaya Koks - 8:45pm

Alaling began as a solo bedroom project with Ching, her acoustic guitar, an RM12 Labtec computer mic, and the discovery of multitrack recording software. Now, she is backed by The Kaya Koks, with Boon on guitars and Beng on bass.

Together, they make music that leaves you wanting to do nothing but chase after the ice cream man and blowing bubbles on a sunshiney Saturday. Alaling & The Kaya Koks are a fun-loving bunch, whose trademark giggles and infectious giddiness permeates a room leaving you all warm and fuzzy. Whether on stage performing, on a radio show being interviewed or acting silly for their YouTube videos, Alaling and The Kaya Koks is sure to make the grey skies blue.

They will release their debut EP, One Cucumber, Fuji Apple in October 2008.

Friday night's potential headliner is an often mentioned band here.

I'm hoping that they'd be free to come down for the show. Let's see how...

If not, any suggestions, bro edder bro?

Get Akta Angkasa to be the headlining act. :D

Erm, well, I asked them for a show last year but they said the stage was too huge. Now this is the smaller one.

Maybe they might do it?

I was thinking And They Will Kill Us All? I dunno...

Actually, we are waiting for Bittersweet to confirm with us. :)

If they are not available, we are hoping one of the rest would be.

KLPHQ just played for our show last year... That was pretty fun but the band is in hiatus now. So are Ferns.

Well, I was looking forward to catch Telebury and furniture myself but unfortunately, I can't.

The final line-up is out... :)

Bring more dough if you are coming down for the show for the weekend. Most of them have just released a new EP or LP. Help boost the Malaysian economy if you like what you hear!
