Rob Balducci
-The Color of Light (Favoured Nations)

Rob Balducci isn’t exactly a household name in guitar-shred territory but the more initiated among us would know that Balducci has some refreshing ideas up his sleeves in all of his releases.

If you are looking forward to incredible fretboard acceleration, The Colour of Light features only a fraction of this expectation. Balducci isn’t a proponent of speed per se although there are passages in this album which highlight his capacity to play up-tempo with ease. Instead, what you will hear in The Colour of Light, is some laid back playing which are crafted to taste, hence earning Balducci the title of ‘restrained shredder’ among his peers. But present are his urgency to put forth an applaudable listening material, Balducci takes his time to deliver an impressionable passage to the discerning listener; this is his forte.

The Colour of Light is less zen-like than its predecessor, Mantra. On the contrary, it offers some very introverted tunes, peppered with fine tone experimentations, thanks largely to Balducci’s new Conford amp & custom Ibanez guitar. Those who prefer quick shuffles might be impatient with the overall tempo of this album but it’s a great alternative to hearing a million notes per hour shredding.

Balducci’s playing here isn’t exactly new, we’ve heard it all before prior to this listening experience. You will acquire this album because you value the amazing urgency & command on display; it’s a lesson in control, a well-delivered one indeed.

Hmm.. Personally, this album is not to my favor. Excess usage of wah, not so melodic phrasing.
