hey all,
does anyone here have experience with Meinl cymbals?
ive been to their website and the sound samples are incredible..
also, quite a few of my fav drummers use the byzance series..
Benny Greb, Wolfgang Haffner, Ralf Gustke etc...

i was particularly interested in the Meinl Byzance Traditional line of cymbals..
i have heard nothing but good things about the rides and crashes..and i myself think they sound really orgasmic :p
i love how the rides are so crashable and washy..i guess its personal pref cos i know lots of u prefer ping and definition..

for an idea of the sound, check these links out (all from cymbalsonly.com)

ok whatever...so my point is, wld u go for a brand like meinl? or stick with the big guns like zildjian, sabian, or even paiste..or mix up cymbals from them all..??

thx

meinl's now one of the big 4 in terms of other cymbal makers...

what differntiates them is that they have a variety of alloys and cymbal series to choose from.. diff hammering patterns and stuff..

pretty great marketing standpoint, but i think let the ears be the judge.. but their cymbals do come with a hefty pricetag.

$0.02.

our beloved cymbalsmith, Drum_hobbyist aka fuman has a collection of a few of the series. MB10 and some old classics like the custom cymbal shops. give him a PM!

I think cymbals or drums even still need your personal preference in terms of finding your own sound. But one thing I like about Meinl is that the way they combine traditional way of cymbal making with technology. And some of the sound produced by these instruments make real nice sound with a little bit of cutting edge in it.

I personally uses Byzance fast hats 13" too and I love it! Try out all the sounds you can find and find your own. And that includes all the brands you can find including the big 4. I guess that will still be the best.

Meinl is great. The Byzance and Gen X lines are pure class.

I own a 21" Byzance Trad Medium Ride and a 10" Byzance Dark splash. Lovely examples of cymbals. As much as I'd love to have a pure Meinl setup, I also really dig my other cymbals. I've got a mix of Paistes, Sabians, Zildjian and a couple others.

I particularly love the Byzance hats and rides. ECK, those hats are fckin' awesome. Score!

"Try out all the sounds you can find and find your own."

Word. This has been said too many times here in the forum. Find YOUR sound. It's a long and winding road, but oh-so-worthwhile. If you would like to hear the 21" Byzance Med ride in person, drop me a PM and we can work something out.

hey erm, do you think Meinl is overpriced like zildjian? Or they DO deserve the price tag? What do you think about Meinl's lower end cymbals - MCS, HCS, comparable to other brands etc paiste/sabian entry sets (PST5, XS20) in terms of price? I've heard the recordings which I really like but then again,I have not heard them in - cymbal.

every cymbal has been priced for their own class of qualities...

no cymbal is overpriced.. if u wanna talk about overpricing, maybe paiste is really a tad bit more expensive.. a pair of DE hats can set u back about 900 sgd.. even a 18" crash is about 600+ already..

but the money ur paying is so much worthwhile for the quality and sound that YOU LIKE and you deserve.

no cymbal is overpriced. period.

hey all..thnks for replying..
yea, i know all about personal preference, but i was just curious as to how many of you use meinl and what you guys thought of their products...in terms of durability, etc...not just sound...cos ive established that i LOVE the sound of their cymbals..so now i just need to convince myself their worth the money!!

Personally, Meinl sounds the best to me.. Planning to trade my A's sooner or later for either the Mb20 or Mb 10 series ;)

My church's setup has a 16" meinl custom shop fusion crash
dark and beautiful undertones

For my personal set
I own a 14" Meinl Soundcaster Medium hats (B12 alloy, discontinued series)
The chick is defined and towards the bright end, controlled wash which responds well to light to heavy touches
I've played a vareity of 14" hats, to name a few, HH medium, Turkish classic, new beats, quick beats, K custom dark
in fact, I played it side by side with the HH medium and it beats the HH pair hands down in terms of playing touch and versatility

the other pair which I love out of the few I mentioned would be the K custom dark hats

I've heard great stuff about the byzance and amun series as well

the build and sound quality is absolutely fabulous with the variety of alloy available, compared to zildjian and sabian, which mainly deals with b20 and b8 stuff

meinl used to be pretty affordable till the recent change to euro pricing
that's when it becomes rather expensive

but still, I would think it's worth the buck imho

my 2 cents worth

Meinl sound are great. Sound really brilliant and awesome, and pitching is high.
I got a drumset at home with 8 Meinl cymbal include effect cymbal, try use model like Byzance, Soundcaster and Generation X, its worth it bro...\m/
