Getting the natural wah tone on a bass

It is not very clear to me how such a natural wah tone is obtained, as can be heard in the video I have attached, forward to 7:50 you can hear him demo

Is it something to do with the EQ, or the pickups, or the fact that it is fretless? How can I achieve the same slight wah sound on a fretted bass?

The tone you hear from this video is the fact that the bass is fretless...and a darn good one too. This bass is built by Tom Clements. You can check out his basses here...Tom Clements. I used to own one made by him and the "mwah" tone from the fretless was amazing! It was very light too so you can play it the whole night without any strain. If you're interested just email him on a quotation. He's real friendly....just that this year he's got lots of orders so be a little patient.

So it is theoretically not possible to get from a fretted bass? I have been considering his basses, probably a lined-fretless but I just need to investigate how to get the tone I want before splurging on a custom haha.

From the basses i played, only a fretless will get you the "mwah", and a good one. I've had a fretless which wasn't build very well and it didn't produce a good mwah tone. The woods does play a part too. Tom Clements specialises in building fretless basses. You won't go wrong with one of his. I've been silently regretting selling that fretless i had but at least it went to a good home.

Thank you very much for the recommendation and advise. I need to OT a bit here, regarding the shipping, does he ship direct to SG? And approximately how much was the shipping when you shipped yours in?

I didn't get mine direct from him...only asked him for a quote. Just so happens a fellow softie was selling one so i got it from him instead. The good thing about his basses is he builds all bolt-ons, so for shipping, he'll dismantle them and pack them in a smaller box thus shipping is less. Exactly how much i'm not too sure. Drop him a mail and you can discuss this with him.

dear Mr asteroth, to get that 'MWAH' its not 'wah' , a 'wah' tone is generated when one connects a WAH pedal between the bass guitar and an amplifier. the 'wah' is a modulation effect.

'MWAH' on the other hand is putting flesh to strings on wood. it is a actually a technique that comes naturally when a fretless bass is played.

Yes, he ships to Singapore with the bass parted.

Got my fretted not too long ago..

Oh he mentioned to me there should be three of his basses in SG. Which number are you? Very nice top! May I know what those little knobs and switches are haha

you can get wah tone on bass but you need an acg filter preamp instead. but this is more like tapping and playing with the filter knob at the same time
