Tech 21 California with DI mod.
This is a Mesa Boogie Pre-Amp. Designed for studio recordings but you can also run it live straight to the mixer. The California works like an amp-in-a-box. It gives you the Rectifier character regardless of what amplifier you are using. You can leave it there for stacking of other drives to bring it up a notch during leads or to cut through the mix. Just like any Tech 21 Character Series, the “character” and “drive” knobs give you so many options. If you wish to run an amp-less rig at some point in time, this is a cost-friendly tool. It has its own speaker simulator that runs within the circuit so you do not have to worry about drives sounding weak or with not much headroom.
The Mods:
1. Balanced XLR output
2. Ground lift switch
3. Pre/Post switch
With the mod, it gets even better. Balanced output helps to cancel noise that is picked up during phase inversion and supports longer cable runs from your pedals to the mixer. It is essentially a preamp and a DI. The mod is done by Mike Putnam over at Putnam Guitars in the US.
Like every DI, the balanced output comes with a Ground Lift switch to remove the hum that might be caused by the ground loop by differences in resistance to ground between amplifiers and mixers.
The Pre/Post switch is another thing that comes in handy. When switch is set to Pre: XLR is always pre-effect. When switch is set to Post: XLR is always post-effect regardless of the footswitch and ¼” output.
