there is no best. really depends on what kind of tone you are looking for.

Yea bass body woods are all over the place but most of the necks seem to be maple.

My bass is all koa; I bought it just because it looked so beautiful. It had nothing to do with the sound. But if I had to do it over I might go for a koa body and a maple neck.

for body i would go for a lightweight swamp ash just for gigging a rather solid wenge fingerboard with a birds eye maple neck for bolt on

for neck thru it will be Zebrano or Buck Eye Burl for the body, mahogany neck with tigerstripe ebony fretboard.

The link from Warmoth in my post above has a "Tone-Meter" for the differnet types of wood from "Warm" to "Bright"

i think or read somwhere the body rank low in the affecting the tone.

i think electronics, strings, pups, neck, amps effect the tone more than the body.

From what i know there are no custom luthiers here who make bodies like that. Too much work too small a market.

If you want you gotta ship it in man.
