The Les Paul Special Faded is 6 string electric that has been purposely worn in areas on the guitar that usually get the most use. It is one of the Faded Series which also includes the LP Double Cut-Away, Flying V, and SG Special all purposely pre-worn. The guitar is also somewhat less expensive than other Les Pauls because it doesn't have any binding around the body, neck or headstock. The areas which appear to be worn are near the 3-way pickup selector, the control knobs, and the upper part of the body. You can see the area's more clearly in the above picture. Only the color has been worn away and not the actual finish. So you don't have to worry about moisture getting in to the wood.
The body is made of mahogany with no top or binding. The bridge is a tune-o-matic type with a stopbar tailpiece. All the hardware is chrome plated which will still give you years of wear and tear as only the wood finish has been distressed and not the hardware. Chrome plating is more durable than nickel plating.
The 24.7 5 inch scale length neck has the 60's slim taper style neck profile which is considered to be the faster and easier to play than the more vintage '59 profile. It's made of a single piece of mahogany and has a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets. The inlays are simple Pearloid dot inlays. The body/neck joint is at the 16th fret. The tuners are the more vintage Green Key type which is base on the Kluson Keystone tulip tuners. As with most 60's slim-taper necks they become thicker as you go down the neck. This allows your fingers to more easily move along the neck while still maintaining the strength of the neck.
The electronics consist of the traditional two volume and two tone controls with a 3-way pickup selector. The gold Tophat control knobs are another item that lends a more vintage appeal. The pickup selector is wired: bridge, bridge+neck, and neck. The pickups used are the more modern 490R in the neck (rhythm) position and a 498T in the bridge (treble) position. The two pickups are designed to complement one another with the 490R having a slightly narrower string spacing because of the narrowing of the strings as they go from the bridge to the nut (near the headstock/tuners area). Both pickups use Alnico magnets which are closer to sounding like the vintage humbuckers than the ceramic based humbuckers. The 490R has a moderate output and sound (creamy yet still can crank) that is similar to the '57 classic but the 490R has more extended high frequencies. The 498T is a more powerful pickup than the 490R which is what you would want. It uses the slightly more powerful Alnico V magnets and is wound in such a way as to boost the mid and upper frequencies. It's a bit more aggressive than that of the '57 classic and makes a great rock pickup.
