awwesome!! this is one of the rare times the media brought up the local music scene... i really hope this happens more often... yay! local music lives!

Quite disappointing 2 c only pop rock bands on the papers........

wat abt the rest..... like metal..... hardcore........

it seems like the same mistakes are made again........ tend 2 give other countries think tat only pop rock exist in S'pore........

btw, S'pore bands DON'T ONLY INCLUDED pop rock.........

WAT ABT THE METAL STUFFS........ HARDCORE STUFFS........ SOMETHING HEAVY.......

none, man.......

it's nothing personal........ just my thoughts........ but I feel tat local acts can made a GREATER impact if metal bands are in the papers........ just look at countries like Malaysia....... Tawian....... China........

r we still making the same mistakes again n again........

Well..! i hope that the media would oso pay attention to the metal hardcore bands too as wat mention by afterdeath though it does nt attract much to the mainstream....bt mayb sme day hope it wil happn..who knows..!

i agree, man........

many wait 4 things 2 happen.......

only a handful make things happen........

anyway, I feel that local music will only improve if media start showing metal hardcore bands........

a lot of my friends dun even know such bands exit locally........

but they manage to hear such bands in other neighbouring countries........

n btw they dun like those who enjoy such songs........ yet they r more "ROCK" musically than those who claim they r rockers.....

hahaha....... WAT AN IRONNIC........

All this depends on how the media takes its direction from the higher-ups.

I tink now they loosen up becoz we hv new PM and he wants everyone to know he is cool unlike the previous PMs.. hopes he stays that way and allow our local talents to come forward man!

After all , the papers already reported that in the 80s, local bands canna taxed 40% entertainment levy (so that they don't hv money to take drug!) while foreign bands were not levied..ridiculous !
Sure way to kill the local music scene, one whole generation of artistes died without seeing the daylight of their talents mah!

Hope they DONT REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKE!

WHOOOO HOOO! *chants* PLP PLP PLP PLP PLP PLP PLP PLP...
I'm going to read and archive that as soon as I get back to Singapore...so are you gonna start archiving stuff after all James?

Singapore only bring up those band that can sells. Why invest so much money when you can make a profit? Singapore is always driven by profit. There isn't many metal fans in S'pore and many go into mainstream musics.

This not only happen to Singapore. Other countries in the west also have this problem. There's plenty of metal bands, but many are in the underground music scene. While bands that are play music that masses like are usually pop rock bands. Look at all the shredders, the metal bands, how many are really mainstream? So don't blame Singapore for everything, blame the people for bad music taste.

"Bad music taste"? I'm sure that most people would hardly define loud, garish, heavily distorted sounds and guttural singing to be music in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm don't hate metal or hardcore. I listen to my Thursday and Thrice just fine alongside my Coldplay. Just that you guys have to realise that "mainstream music" is called what it is for a reason; it appeals to a wider audience. I just attended Electrico's free concert at the UCC and there were grandpas and grandmas clapping along to the music. That's mainstream. I don't think being underground is a "problem". When you decided to play or listen to metal and hardcore, I'm sure you already had the mindset that you wanted to be different. So why gripe that you're not recognized by the mass media? Instead of putting them down, we should give them our support and solidarity and together, bring out the local music scene as a whole.

By the way, the bands featured in Life are not only pop rock. The music that ASPIDISTRA FLY and the Observertory play aren't exactly what you would call mainstream music. I remember watching ASPIDISTRA FLY at the Tesseract and I wondering what the f- was going on. Same with Morphy during their album launch where I was helping out. But still they made it through hard work and good musicianship. So please, don't hate and don't pigeonhole yourself. Local music is going through a revival. Hone your skills, listen widely and if you're good, you will surely be recognized.

I'm personally a metal fan myself, though I play in a hard rock band.
The one way the 'local' music scene can improve is support for all genres of music. The mainstream to the underground, and the underground to the mainstream.

If there is wider acknowledgement from all the masses, the level of acceptance for all genres will improve. At the same time, if the public sees the 'local' scene griping amongst themselves as to who the better genre is, it will be difficult to expect local press, casual listeners, and otherwise to respond with excitement. I don't listen to lounge or chill out music much, but I went out to purchase The Observatory CD. It's just a sign of tribute, to the people who are getting the act together and really helping everyone.

Because if one band breaks the barriers, mainstream or not, it lets the public know how much everything has grown. And metal and hardcore genres will benefit as well because people who were not made aware of the bands before would go out to find these bands and appreciate them.

We are amongst one of the few countries in the world where local music is considered 'local' music; a separate entity of a lesser quality than 'international'. When you listen to, say, Megadeth or Maroon 5 - Cradle of Filth to Cranberries - do we care where they are from? No way. So we should all work towards the mentality that being local or not, it makes no difference to the masses. But if we gripe amongst ourselves, it won't help any bands; metal, hardcore, mainstream or otherwise.

3 cheers for the 'local focus'!! Its been like the 3rd article issit? in as many months!

Anyway, its very good that LIFE! ran the article already. Can't please everyone though...

Well, fortunately, a good mix of punk/emo/pop/rock bands were covered. Maybe like you said, the underground metal, maybe progressive rock scene is not covered.

But, no doubt those journalists will be sniffing whatever that may present itself...Just drop a friendly hint to them... maybe they can even do an article/report on the whole metal sub-culture in singapore yah.

ya, if you happened to be interviewed, do mention, "What? You never been to soft.com.sg?"

haha........ James..... If I got the chance....... hahaha......... I will defintely mention abt soft........
