I'm personally a metal fan myself, though I play in a hard rock band.
The one way the 'local' music scene can improve is support for all genres of music. The mainstream to the underground, and the underground to the mainstream.
If there is wider acknowledgement from all the masses, the level of acceptance for all genres will improve. At the same time, if the public sees the 'local' scene griping amongst themselves as to who the better genre is, it will be difficult to expect local press, casual listeners, and otherwise to respond with excitement. I don't listen to lounge or chill out music much, but I went out to purchase The Observatory CD. It's just a sign of tribute, to the people who are getting the act together and really helping everyone.
Because if one band breaks the barriers, mainstream or not, it lets the public know how much everything has grown. And metal and hardcore genres will benefit as well because people who were not made aware of the bands before would go out to find these bands and appreciate them.
We are amongst one of the few countries in the world where local music is considered 'local' music; a separate entity of a lesser quality than 'international'. When you listen to, say, Megadeth or Maroon 5 - Cradle of Filth to Cranberries - do we care where they are from? No way. So we should all work towards the mentality that being local or not, it makes no difference to the masses. But if we gripe amongst ourselves, it won't help any bands; metal, hardcore, mainstream or otherwise.
