Anyone knows whether the original windows XP CD can be shared with two computers? What will happen if I do that?

Cos I just had my computer repaired and the serviceman installed a burnt one for me ( **** him!)

Thanks for the advise!

burnt copy is fine my fren... more impt is the key... the so called password when u install on ur pc, it shld only be used once, else deemed pirate

an original piece can only be installed on 2 coms if i'm not wrong.
if u'rs is a pirated copy, then it'd be best if u dun install any updates from microsoft.

You won't be able to activate your second set of computer online. Unless your second set has the same hardware as the first, or you find a hack tool. Either way is illegal.

You as the rightful owner of the PC must make sure that you have the proper licensed software and id key on hand when you send your PC in for repairs.

Most branded PCs have a preload restore disk, which is helpful for tech savvy user. Licence should be pasted at PC side or top panel. Although some PCs have a preloaded version, which is a common 'skeleton key' ID installed. But Win XP is such that everyone must activate it to use it.

It is illegal to load on a second set of PC if your licence only cover one user.

It's tough, but that's how things works. Likely the PC is using a hacked version winXP now.

I had mine... I was using HP.

The serviceman told me that my motherboard is spoiled and I might as well upgrade it... Now everything in my computer isn't hp at all and I cant use the CD which they gave... And thats the reason why the man installed a burnt one for me.

So if I borrow the cd from my cousin it will not work as well? She's using a laptop while I want to install into my desktop.

Likely branded PC or notebook have what we call a restore CD. This is specific to that model only, and will not work on other model and brand. It is not the Win XP install CD.

Not uncommon for HP to have blown motherboard, I have seen quite a number of those cases too. And the CD-KEY on the license will not likely work on installers, seem to be code sensitive to the manufacturer of the PC.

Yeah. all these should move to computer forum. Lets keep Soft as a music hub.

Hmm... So what do u suggest I'll do? Is there no other alternatives and have the buy the original software?

Man, I'll rather spend it on some guitar effects... :(

afaik, micro$oft dont care if you have a pirate version, they just reccomend you buy it

I went to download something from their site and it said i had a pirate version and i should buy the real one.

im pretty sire they wont do anything.

There's a way to install Windows even though it is a restore CD without running it as a restore (ie clean install). It requires a bit of technical know how. But I doubt it will work - since your hardware is already changed and your old HP CD will not activate.

Looks like you'll have to get a new copy of Windows. If you're still under warranty, call the HP serviceman and tell him to give you an original Windows XP. If not, sorry. No other way.

You cannot install 2 copies of Windows - cannot be activated. There's some way around it but I shouldn't say it since I don't support piracy...
