hi
i am a guitar noob..
can explain why the need to learn scales(the do re mi fa so)?
when to apply the techniques to?
is it to improve ur fingering tech?
or so tat can play solo?

lets us meditate on why we have to learn scales. alot of times people picking up the guitar ask this question due to its complexity and the time required to master it. even tho my knowledge of scales isnt complete, i shall attempt to explain them in a manner where it will not only change your perspectives on scales, but make it totally personal to you as well...

after all, guitar..let alone music, is supposed to be about you alone.

try playing C, D, Em, F and G for a long period of time and see wether you get tired of playing it over and over again. im sure you will rite? with that answered, a guitarists must learn his scales because he must also learn how to create licks and solos accompanying the chord progression. you can even use scales to create your own chords. neat huh? this is to show that music doesnt have any limits or boundaries.

i assume you mean fancier stuff like vibrato, tapping etc etc? well, to be honest, do them....where you feel its right for you. its your imagination playing the guitar. but of course, there are the important ones like your alternate picking technique, which must ALWAYS applied to your picking technique. doing downstrokes all the way will be a very very hard habit to kick after some period of time.

in a way yes, but i guess it all boils down to personal preference. personally they stretch my fingers as well, my fretting fingers are like, slightly longer than my picking fingers. ive been practicing the minor pentatonic scale and i once used the wrong fingers to play them until a teacher corrected me. and the thing was, i wasnt comfortable with my own method either.

in conclusion: as long you're comfortable, carry on ;)

scales are never limited to solos alone. scales can be used to compose the whole song even! they can be used to churn out licks, parts of a song, etc etc etc...

ok this may be be a bit off topic now..
what i would suggest now is that you focus on technique building first. pick any scale, and just work those fingers till they fall off the fret. dont worry too much on theory first, we just wanna make sure that when you play any scale at any time, your technique wont get in the way of your playing. strengthen both your fretting and picking hand, make them develop a strong rhythmic coordination between each other, and we'll work on scales later. listen to a lot of music while you're at it.

so remember, scales are meant to be deviated in your mind, and to be yourself!

i really hope this has helped you and i wish you all the best in your happy guitar playing days ahead! ;)

cheers

clayedhead....!!!! What a beautifully simple and correct answer.

Asking "Why should I study scales?," is like medical student asking "Why should I study anatomy?"
