Why exactly do we need to know arpeggios?

Arpeggios (and scales) are to guitarists and musicians what multiplication tables are to mathematicians (and just about everyone).

Learn them for now and their uses will become evident, but here's some of them:

Allow you to see chord shapes on the neck
Allow you to further understand how chords are built
Breaks you out of scalar patterns
Great for sweep picking
Can be applied in 'broken chord' form for nice finger picking parts
Shows chord tones which are great for soloing and sounding good over chord progressions
