Why do we need rug for drums ?

It prevents the bass drum from moving forward when you stomp hard on the bass pedal.

What I've noticed, though, is that a lot of movement can be caused by HOW you stomp the bass- I've seen some people have problems with bass drum movement when I don't experience it on the same kit.

Yup... If I'm not mistaken its more than just prevent the bassdrum and hihat stand from "creeping" forward. It's also to prevent the bass spurs from scratching the flooring, as well as improving (slightly) the acoustics of the area.

Without the rug or carpet, you'll be hitting your snare (or tom, cymbals or anything) and getting "bounce" off the floor you're on. Imagine trying to mic your kit up that way... :S

Ah yes, I forgot about floor damage! I think quite a lot of concert stages can get rather particular about that.

By the way, alvyn, you should check the links in your sig. I think the old threads have been culled...
