well for the money and performance I would choose K2,,since I play with them quite often. but remember..great microphone is nothing without good Preamp..

well..to me I rather Invest my money in good microphone and good preamp rather than soundcard/converter, cause soundcard/converter always develop while preamp and microphone still in same page 50years ago with different in manufacturing process. I'd rather go with boutique preamp rather than mass produced cause you got the best hand to build those. I would choose Great River electronic ME1NV (www.greatriverelecronics) single channel for about 1100USD. check out www.gearslutz.com and search that product and you will find out why people like it. even SM57 plug on that would sound great..
in money wise, you can buy good microphone/preamp and sold it when you need the money with small depreciation..

Ps: Pm me if you need more info regarding GR Preamp

thanks for the reply.

what preamps would you recommend? i'm currently using m audio fw410. is that good enough?

hmm, i'd probably go for the K2 too if I were you. i'm using an NTK. which K2 came out right after I bought it. damn..

I use the NTK on PV5150 guitar amp mike up in this recording..

sometimes for vocals like the recording @ www.myspace.com/underedge
sorry that one wasn't mixed properly so it sounds a little rawish

I normally run the U87 thru either the 1066s or Focusrite REDs

For newer preamps, You may want to consider these:

(1) Universal Audio LA-610 (http://www.uaudio.com/products/analog/LA-610/index.html) This is a legend reborn...

(2) Focusrite RED series (http://www.focusrite.com/products.asp?iRange=4) These are still one of the Industry Standards

(3) DW Fearn VT-1 (http://www.dwfearn.com/vt1.htm) Great sounding Tube Mic Pre

(4) API Rackmounted 3124 (http://www.apiaudio.com/3124.html)

(5) GML 8304 (http://www.massenburg.com/cgi-bin/ml/mod8304) CLASSIC!

(6) Avalon Design (http://avalondesign.com/index-main.html) Another Industry Standard !

Cheers...!

Turbochicken,
You got to test the mics yourself man!!!! Vocal mics are dependent on your voice, it don't mean the most pro or highly reviewed mic will sound great with your vocal cords. There are many surprises.... Go check out at some shops and request to test to fit your voice, though they will be hesitant, be persistent with it. You can chk out Hung brothers or Esden at Sim Lim, they are more helpful. Yamaha will bring in AKG and Shure mics today, i wouldn't mind giving you a hand there. Just look for me (Calvin)....
Enjoy!!!
