Which guitar to buy?

Hi guys, so I have been playing the guitar on and off for a couple years now and always wanted to get a new guitar. My dad just told me he would sponsor me some cash to get a slightly better guitar if it'll help motivate me more.

I looked around and a few guitars fit around the budget he set for me, which is around 1k. Hence, would like to seek your advice on which I should get. Havent gone round to test yet but i wanna hear what you guys got to say about the choices.

In no order of preference:

Taylor 100 series
Furch G20-CM http://www.bgwguitars.com/data/furch12.htm
Guild F-130RCE http://www.bgwguitars.com/guild.htm

Or should I just get a cheaper smaller guitar like the GS Mini or the likes.

Hope to get some valuable feedback. Thank you!

Both the Furch and Guild look like good deals. Having played none of the particular guitars mentioned, specs and look wise i would go for the furch as it seems beautifully crafted, and it is also all solid wood which some claim ages better over time, sound wise. I like the body shape as well.

I will not recommend other brands as it seems you have done some research and come up with some good options. Bear in mind the Taylor is laminate and the lowest of their series. I like that the furch has a cutaway and satin finish, but thats me. Maybe some of the other softies can weigh in.

Hi Icel3m0nt3a, you have the same cosmetic preferences as myself. Lol. Thank a bunch for the advice. I will be going down to try the sound for myself soon, but after research and youtube, the Furch seriously has me sold. Hope it doesn't go out of stock before I go test it!

For now, I'll wait and see if anyone has anything else to say.

Thanks again!

Hey Gateux,

Saw your post, thought I'd give my two cents worth.

I'm not the best guitar player on the planet or anything,
neither do I know everything there is to know about guitars,
but one of the few things I've learned in the 7 or 8 years I've been
playing or is that you don't really need to fork out 1,000 dollars to
get a good guitar.

This is because guitars/music instruments are a highly subjective thing,
what fits one player may not fit another, and a well taken care of Yamaha
Pacifica strat for example can yield results comparable to a MIM or MIJ
Fender Stratocaster, even though the price differential between the two
is considerable.

That being said, it would help if you told us what kind of music you play
(acoustic, singer-songwriter stuff, jazz, country, rock) and whether you're
looking for a guitar to perform with/strum around at home or at campfires.
Since you say you play on and off, you must also understand that guitar tone
not the brand of your guitar is what really matters in your playing. And whilst
people may say that gear matters, I honestly think tone is in your fingers.
Good gear may help, but it will never replace how well and often you play and
know your instrument.

Taylors, Furch's and Guilds may all be very good guitars, I've played a few myself
at guitar shops in the US where I used to study for a while, but honestly, it may
just be me, but I do not notice any huge sonic differences between that and other
well made, well set-up and well maintained guitars belonging to other brands

My advice to you is to check out Sound Alchemy at Excelsior Hotel Shopping Centre,
Basement 1. They've got some really good Yamaha acoustic guitars there, the FG
series is particularly good, they've even got some semi-acoustics if you wish to plug
in to an amplifier, and the good thing is it won't blow a hole in your pocket.

Go around to different guitar shops and try all their guitars. Heck, the Swee Lee outlet
at Sims Drive has a 12-string Epiphone for about 400 I think that sounds sweet.
Trust me, save yourself and your dad some cash, get a good reasonably priced guitar that
plays just as well as a high end one, take care of it (i.e polish, clean fretboard, clean strings),
and you'll have a good guitar that will last many years.
