Hi Guys,

new to the forum... used to play guitar more than 10yrs ago during secondary sch days... just found my classical guitar in my store and keen to pick it up again... but it doesnt really sound right...

do i need to change my strings (more than 10yrs old) and where can i get it tuned?

i stay in amk, hopefully there are shops nearby? or i can travel to anywhere to get it done...

thanks in advance for all advice!

some stores do re-stringing for you (at a fee, of course...). subsequently, you can do it yourself, just invest in a tuner:

thanks guys, i dun know how to tune a guitar or how to use a tuner... i just brought the guitar to Swee Lee and they charge me $25 to service my guitar which they will clean and change strings and tune for me... and i paid $12 for a set of new strings... :D

if you are going to pay $25 dollars every time you need your guitar tuned, this is going to be an expensive hobby

Unfortunately, restringing a classical guitar is much harder than other types (yup, even harder than a Floyd Rose) since you need to knot it correctly at both ends. I learned how to do it correctly from the book 'The Complete Guitarist' by Richard Chapman which has decent pictures of the process and which I still refer to when restringing. I'm sure there are many online versions though.

Get a good reference and learn to do it yourself is the key message.

$25 is cleaning and polish the guitar + changing strings + tuning...

will tuning always "run"?

after changing new strings, the guy @ swee lee did tell me with new strings, the sound will run after a while when the new strings get loose... than he said he will tune it for me free for the next few times...

The tuning will "run" or go out of tune after some time. $25 for these services are too costly. You can get a bottle of guitar polish at less than $10 and it will last you for a long long time. You can also get a electronic guitar tuner at less than $20 and it will last you even longer. It is very easy to use the tuner. Learn to do it yourself. You will find satisfaction in doing so and DIY will definitely help to save money.

when you just change strings on a classical it will go out of tune every 10 mins and takes about 3-4 days to stabilise.

cause the string will stretch itself or something.

but sometimes i tune like 2 semitones above standard and keep it there for a while, do some bends, stretch out the strings and tune it back down to standard tuning, and it stays. Works for most of my guitars. If you are scared of breaking the strings though don't try this, just keep retuning :D

A cheap basic guitar tuner cost $15 and above - which is a lot cheaper than paying $25.

Also, I figured how to restring my classical by carefully examining the strings knots at the head stock and saddle. It's possible to figure out to tie the strings by simply examining the knots. You just need a bit of patience and imagination.
