Cheap and good normally remains as an oxymoron within the realms of bass strings. It doesn't help that we have to ship them in from the US either.

Your best bet would be to buy something a little pricey, but that lasts way longer. Some strings that fall into that category would be the elixirs, coated DRs, TI jazz rounds (those take a little while to break in) and not forgetting the Ritter Swordteels (which I have a set for sale if you're interested ;) )

I have a certain fondness for SIT Powerwounds. Nice balance between brightness and punch, and last pretty long as well.

slowwound cost me 60 bucks only at yamaha and always out of stock!..
prizm will end me at 30 at sweelee i think. i seldom tried strings cause worried that it doesnt' fit my playing i love this two type but just that it is hard to maintain at that price.. i did tried warwick 6 strings and after 3 weeks it sound dull and i really dislike ernies balls too bright and snap off if i pull too hard..some of my friends even ask me how i break bass strings! faintz. guess i still have to learn alot in controlling. i will find out more of the recomanded strings thanks

Nice avatar - if I'm not mistaken, it's Andy Bailey's Nordstrand :D

Bout the slowwounds being expensive. A set of Daddarios that retail for around $25 at Davis, goes at over $40 in Music Plaza. So go reckon :) I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price. Anyway if I'm not mistaken, Slow wounds have been discontinued by Daddario.

Also I believe the Warwick strings at Swee Lee are supposedly the "low end" range. Never tried em myself though, so not much comments on em. How do/often do you clean your strings?

cleaning about once a week to D'andrea lemon oil for my fingerboard and D'andrea string cleaning & lubricant for my string after i play also about a week or more cause play very little nowadays.. i dont recomand this brand actually haha .. just that that time need to do some cleaning so no choice just grab a pack from yamaha tamp..and till now i still using the same bottle..
...issit stop production already? hmmm i left with only 1 spare pack wha.. better keep ... but i still see 5 strings pack selling around .. bored..

Try to keep off the lemon oil. As with everything else, it's to be used sparingly and periodically. Overdoing it might cause problems. There are different types of "lemon oil", one type being a lubricant and the other has degreasing properties.

So you could end up with an oil logged fingerboard (you'll know when u can dig parts of ur fingerboard out with ur fingernail) or one that's too dry (cracks). Once a week sounds too much if you are trying to soak the fingerboard in it. Try using a clean piece of cloth instead. Personally I use very little teak oil with a paper towel to clean my fingerboard once a month or so.

Perhaps you can try this as well. Go to your neighbourhood DIY or paint store and get a bottle of Mineral Spirit. Should come in those recycled tiger beer bottle. And cheap as well, bout $2.50 max.

Unwind a string at a time from it's tuning peg and clean it thoroughly with a cotton pad and the mineral spirit. Works as well as boiling the strings and with alot less hassle and less risk of water logged strings rusting.

I used a set of SIT Powerwounds for almost 2 years with periodic cleaning. No one would have suspected that the strings had been on for more than 2 months.

Hey fretless6 :) Yeah - I recognized you. We both have the same handles on BPS :D
Wow... I can't believe the amount of effort you put into maintaining your strings... *claps hands* you should be given some kinda award for that :D
Someone should really buy the set of Ritter swordsteels off me... they're an excellent set of strings.

Hehe u should tell that to the countless fanatics who boil their strings :)

Hahahaha :) Cannot what... you can only boil your strings for at most 2 times before it becomes ineffective (or before you get tired of doing it ;) )
Whereas you clean your strings monthly for 2 years!! Anyways, enough about that. I'll be selling my set to stu, but I still highly encourage you guys to give the swordsteels a go if you have the chance :)
