Yes I have to totally agree with CrazyCactus. I am a newbie too. But I did a lot of scanning thru this SOFT forum. Some are old postings - BUT STILL very good useful info. I even used the PM feature and asked for help. And there was this SOFT user called Kirish who was helpful enough to post me weblinks etc... and I finally found the guitar of my choice.
And as CrazyCactus says.. it depends on your own feel too. Do you like the sound coming off it, do you like the weight, do you like the feel of the fretboard, the neck etc... If you like it, it doesnt matter if it costs $300 or $2000 ... its you that matters. If you dont like the guitar and you bought it, there's no inspiration to learn..
You need to narrow down your choice of what you want and then you go hunt down that guitar. I have an acoustic Yamaha for over 10yrs and it took me 1 year to find my 1st electric guitar and I just bought a few days back after researching, asking for advice and feedback. And now.. I am only starting to research and ask for advice on good teachers. Like most softies here, I am self taught, cant read music score for nuts... I figured I wanted to get some training to learn more technique from the teachers.
To set you off nicely, ask yourself if you will be 'selling off your guitar in future, or if you are like me, intend to keep it for a long time'. I think there are many good models out there.. dont 'trash' those made in mexico, or made in china or crafted in in Japan.. Some are really good and well made..If you plan to sell off your guitar in future, then get one that is made in america - because they hold their value longer as the years go.
I started with my mind set on a epiphone les paul custom (they are all made either in Korea, or China these days) and they were pretty good in sound., but finally I bought a Made in America Fender Strat for the same price as the epi Les Paul. And all those time, I was ignoring the fender strats as I kept thinking it was way off my budget.
Hope that is helpful for you
