Hey guys, i am totally new to guitar and all and im interested in picking 1 up to learn.
However im deciding between classical guitar and acoustic guitar.
Any advice please?
What should a total beginner start learning with?

Thanks a million.

imo its easier to start with the classical guitar cos the 3 nylon strings are more finger-friendly and can help u build the callous on ur fingertips slowly and not painfully too. then move on to the acoustic guitar or electric guitar :)

ALSO classical guitar is kinda cheap if u buy the regular brands like asahi from schools like christophori (duno whether got spell correctly or not)

Asahi company they start making guitars or did they start making beers which one came 1st?

sorry to say but i think that is crap advice. u pick an instrument base on what style u wanna play or the sound u wanna achieve. i dont get the advice of, start off with classical 1st, its easier on the fingers. if your fingers hurt its probably becos ur not pressing on the strings in an ideal manner; ie near to the frets.

and classical guitars is not cheap. all guitars are cheap if u buy the crap firewood version which is not suitable for conducive learning/playing.

hmm. however is it possible to play pop style on a classical guitar?

Yes. u can play any style of music on any kind of guitar but its gonna sound different. there are people who play "classical" music on electric guitars. so go to youtube... look for ur favorite /song and see what instrument they are using.

a classical guitar maybe easier on the fingertips but becos of the larger neck, stretches/barres are more difficult compared to acoustic folk guitar and electric and vice versa.

Hi. I hope no one minds if i hijack this thread to as a quick question. Like sbladerz, i'am new to this however i want to start learning on an electric guitar. I've asked some of my friends and colleagues who play the guitar about this and most of them say its ok to start with whichever type you want.

So can anyone advice me on this? As my mom who used to play accoustic when she was younger said no one ever starts off on an electric straight away.

Waiting to hear from anyone out there! Thanks!

Hello,

csds92 is totally right first you have to start learning playing guitar with with classical guitars and then move to modern electrical guitars. classical guitars are simple to learn because it have less string's. so learn with classical.

good luck!!

Err... what...? A classical guitar has the same number of strings as the traditional six string guitar (6) the last time i checked. Are you referring to a ukulele?

It's actually up to what kinda of music u wanna play. Like if u like rock music, u play the electric guitar even though you are a beginner. Just put effort into it when learning, im sure u will pick up the skills regardless of what guitar u choose ;D

Ok thanks for the advise! :p

Hey firstly I want to thank all of you for your advices. And I got myself a acoustic guitar to start off with. I figure out I have less interest in classical. I got myself a chord book as well. Another question. Should I start start off with learning the chords or should I pick a song and practise?

find songs/stuff that u like and play and learn the chords as they come along. that way your interest wont dwindle. (:

Yeah totally true ;D I didnt did that last time when i was learning, and it was a hell boring experience for me. Instead i started learning simple chords from simple songs, which arent my type =/ so yeah, start with songs u like/wanna play ;D U kill 2 birds with one stone; learn to play ur fav song and the chords involved in the song ;D

Hey TS, give us some info on what you listen to. That will help us recommend songs better but do try and find a few on your own as well. Just find a song that you think is easy (if you find out its not just find another one) and try look up the tabs on the net.

Learning songs that you like gives you the incentive to practice and not give up so easily.
