what is a technical drummer?

My take: 'Technical' derives from the word 'technique'.

Technical drummer: Usually used to describe someone who has extremely masterful grasp of various techniques (odd time sigs, crazy speed, dexterity, rudiments, limb independence, etc) and is usually involved in playing music that showcases/embraces technicality.

Head to youtube, search and watch videos of the following: Virgil Donati, George Kollias, Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini, Marco Minnemann, Vinnie Colaiuta. You might have a better idea after that.

That said, it's just another way for people to describe drummers.

Sometimes 'too technical' is used in a negative sense by people who prefer 'groove-oriented' drummers.

I dun think weckl-x was saying George is technically better than Derek....he was simply just throwing out examples....and weckl-x...you forgot dave "weckl"...haha!

Technical players are more bold I'd say, using unusual and usually complex rhythms. I gave up drumming before I got to that stage. And in my opinion, George Kollias is quite technical, but his drumming to me is messy. I actually prefer Derek Roddy and Pete Sandoval (Pete the Feet!), though Pete isn't very technical but his drumming is solid.

Do your guys know Ringo Starr... he's not a very technical drummer, as The Beatles regularly said, but for 'feel' of the drums, he was the best. Music is very rarely about being technical, and anyone calling him a poor drummer NEEDS to listen to A Day In The Life, his best performance by far. Also Ticket To Ride (despite the fact he was directed by McCartney) and the fade-out of Strawberry Fields. Oh, and of course the drum solo on The End.

Tomas Haake is also a good example of a Technical drummer,as his drumming style is mostly usage of polyrhythms while often maintaining a steady 4/4 beat.

To me a lil of Johnny Rabb. But i still love the way he drums, always putting the gravity blast tech or freehand tech ( I don't really know the diff, could someone explain to me? Haha )

haha, i believe it's the same technique, just that different drummers give it different names, Johnny Rabb: Freehand Tech., Flo Mounier: Gravity Blast, etc.
