what do you do in vocal lessons?

My average vocal lesson starts with warming up (if possible, start this before the lesson), followed by a few exercises. My teacher will listen to my voice in the exercises, and suggest adjustments. Then we'll go through anything I was told to practice over the past week (like vowels).

Then at the end of the lesson, I do my best to sing a song that I've prepared :)

Throughout the lesson he tells me what I will need to work on for next week.

He is learning from a vocal coach Cheng Yao under a training music center Fusion X. Studying under the same teacher like me. One of the very few effective teachers out there. If u want foundations on singing technique, u should look for him. Some vocal teachers tend to complicate things and make the students more confused. He definitely can show how to sing in simple instructions.

If u want, u can check out www.fusionxmusic.com. There's also a free music workshop provided by Fusion X. Just mention that it's Weijie who recommend u. Haha...in any case, I don't believe in promoting the teacher too much. It's only when u really see him in action, then u would believe in the stuff I say.

Cheers
Weijie aka AJ

Wow, that's a glowing recommendation :) Do you get commission? :-P

He's my teacher too .. I like that he doesn't let me get away with second best. If my voice isn't perfect, he'll point it out and make me work on it until it is. That suits me because I'm not happy with second best either :)

Price depends on whether it's group or individual lessons, and also the level of the lessons. It's much cheaper than any other place I've looked at.

Some places I've seen charge $400 monthly for group lessons.. seems excessive for me. At Fusion X I payed around $150 monthly for group lessons, though it was an "offer" price. Individual lessons I would expect you to pay $250-$300 for 4 lessons. They charge for sets of 4 lessons, though I'm sure you can arrange a trial single lesson.

Prices are good, teacher is good :) They have another vocal teacher who I don't have experience with.

Edit: Clarified "groups of 4"

Well I checked out quite abit about Fusion X Music too. Maybe you (rainedrop I mean) can go check out their website. They had this workshop coming up in which they are working with Eng Wah Cinema Group and KBox. As long as you make purchase or spend above a certain amount you get to go to this workshop they organised for free. Its on a weekly basis so I heard. Maybe you can check out how they conduct their classes before committing to taking up their full time course?

As many might have known, there are some special ways for vocal training.

1) The lips brrr-ling

2) Power "ha"

3) Humming

4) Yawning

In-Breath

1) Mouth

2) Nose

Out-Breath (using diaphragm)

1) Audible "Sssss"

2) Blow air out

stretching , warm up, den learnt to use diaphragm to breath in and out and do the above exercises.

I think neo's talking about this: http://fusionxmusic.com/vt/images/events/posters/070918_musicdesire.jpg

For warmups I think nothing beats the lip trill. I've been trying it recently and it works very well for releasing tension. And the two things you need to do when warming up are to get the vocal chords awake and release tension. Lip trill does both of those.

For the lip trill, put your fingers in your cheeks to bring your lips together. That allows you to trill without any tension in your mouth at all. The exact location is tough to find .. what works for me is to put them just past each end of the mouth and lift up a bit.

I also massage and pull out my outer throat muscles if they are tense. Then I do some low scales, monitoring my throat tension and relaxing as I go up. My voice is kinda in flux right now, as I'm recovering from a fever and sore throat. My muscles were so stiff after that!

oh wow tts reli nice. any deadlines for the workshop thingy?

=S fever and sore throat must feel damn horrible. hate it but im kinda prone to these kinda minor illnesses.. which is why im tyring to refrain from chocs and fried stuff. haix. i really like them u noe. lol. anw, i usually just sing a few "easy" songs to warm up.. is tt appropriate? or shld i just try some "classic warm ups" which will be more effective at warming up the vocal chords? anything i can do other than lip trills?

not for youth in particular.

If it works, it's fine :) If it doesn't work, try lip trills. Brett Manning (the Singing Success teacher) considers them to be the ultimate warm-up and teaching tool. Seth Riggs (Speech Level Singing) also uses them.

Jrock, thanks for the info. I think I will check it out when I go jamming this weekend.. what are the opening times?
