wad is power chords?

chord that are so powerful, that they call it power chords. Ok also known as the 5th chords (?)

FInger a note on either the 1st(e) or 2nd string(a), then on the adjacent string, finger the note 2 frets away , then on the next adjacent string finger the note on the same fret as the previous

for instance, a G goes like this

E 3
A 5
D 5
G
B
E

A Power Chord is also known as a 5th chord.

Like in E5, C5 and so on.

Unlike minor chords or major chords, they do not have a tonality because they do not have the 3rd note. The 3rd is what determines the tonality of a chords, whether it is major of minor, or whether it sounds happy or sad.

So for that matter, power chords are really easy to solo over and can be very versatile....

they're also called power chords cos they sound really powerful but only wif distortion. Dun try playing it on clean cos it'll juz sound wimpish.

Its the easiest chord to learn. Ok thats not true, easiest is probably Em. Ok Its the easiest and most fun!!! You'll love it :D

ah they also forget to mention. when doing a power chord like an A5, the G, B and high e strings are unwanted. you can use the lower part of your finger (the meaty part lah) and drape them over the strings so its muted. and if your doing chords like C5 and D5, use your middle finger to mute the low E string and drape over the B and high e string.

im so addicted to power chords man. they are great! i started using them ever since i understood the theory of 5th chords. have fun practicing them

WARNING: POWER CHORD OVERLOAD. MAY BE ADDICTIVE.

lol

Actually fenderrules, its not right to say those strings are unwanted. A power chord is a 5 chord... so you can play all the above mentioned notes, on any strings, and it will still be a power chord.

And example would be the 7th fret E power chord, the one starting from the A string. If left the open strings un-muted, you would still have an E5 chord.

yeah .... shredcow's positive .... power chords can be played in inversions too .... not too fanciful la .... if you can play the 5th note on top of the root note too. It will sound less powerful ... and it works well for certain parts of a song which require less music dynamics.

Try playing E on the nine fret on 4th and 3rd string.

Triads would sound good with distortion too .... for those who dun know, triads are 3 note chords. Very useful for rhythm. :)
