Vocalist interested in drumming.

I've been doing vocals for awhile now, but what I'm really interested in is drumming. I know the basics all that but apart from that i don't know much alr.
Should I go for lessons?

you should, if you're really interested in drumming...actually, anybody can drum. its just your will and interest only :) if you're on for it, go for it!

I mean, i've alr tried drumming and I think I have a pretty good sense of rhythm and coordination.
AND I LOVE THE FEELING. lol.
Is it better to like, learn from a school or can I just learn everything like online and a bit from other people?

Hah, don't we all? :D

It depends really. Do you have the budget to learn from a school?

Personally I feel that if you do, go ahead and learn from a school. It'd do you a whole lot of good, especially you're just starting out. I realise many self-taught drummers, including myself, have pretty bad habits until we get professional help to correct them. Like for instance, man, I thought I was getting pretty good, then I went for the Tama Goh masterclass late last year and pretty much made a fool of myself. I had posture problems and my playing was sorta messy. Sure it sucked, but man it felt good at the same time. Knowing your bad points is half the battle won; you can work on them intensively and correct them.

Learning under an instructor has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

1. He/She will be your guide. Pointing out mistakes, correcting your techniques, yada yada.
2. Teaching and demonstrating to you you techniques that would be way harder to learn off the net.
3. Impartation of wisdom. Most instructors were gigging drummers and learnt at specialised schools of music, so you can learn how it is like and all.

Disadvantages:

1. You might try to emulate his playing, and thus, not having your own voice, character.
2. Instructor limitations (if you stick to one instructor). Instructors (Instructors please correct me if I'm wrong), IMHO, will teach what they know best/are comfortable with. That means you only learn what they teach you.

You'll have to find a instructor who suits you, whom you're comfortable with. Go down to the various schools and chat up the instructors there. Get to know more about them before making your decision.

You must also be willing to learn and practice consistently. No point, IMHO, going for lessons if you ain't gonna practice (other than during your drum lesson). You'll never get better that way.

Sorry for the mess of words, all in all, the gist of it, I feel, is to go ahead and take lessons. It will only do you good.

2cents.

I strongly encourage taking formal lessons, especially for starters.

Imo, having someone to teach/educate/guide/inspire helps bring one in the right direction and fuels his motivation to become better. Once the right foundations are laid, he/she then has the option to carry on taking more lessons or be on his/her own.

Bad techniques and habits are a headache to correct when you get too used to it. It's somewhat a very irritating and tiresome process.

Ps. and it should be cheaper than buying PS3 and the controllers for rock band.

Haha rock band. =.=

Thanks for the advice anyway!
Um around how much do lessons cost?
Or is anybody here willing to teach me for free.. hehehe. :)

haha if there are actually kind people out there who would!
self-taught drummers need to do extensive research online, like myself. its a way to keep it cheap but when you have questions and bad habits like what jeepers mentioned, it'll be hard to know or correct it.

i'd suggest you take lessons from reliable drum instructors or schools.

i'd reccommend http://www.themusiclab.com.sg/
the drum instructor is a real friendly guy. wuahahahaha. =x

You are a Vocalists wanting to play drums and sing.

I 'm a Drummer(though still fresh) trying to sing and drum at the same time.......and only yesterday I think I could maybe drum and sing along - but only for 1 song lah (Pop-Rock Song - You Know My Name).....that's because the drum-beat is quite easy or standard.

When we play "Tangled by Maroon 5" - I found that I can't drum and sing along - because the Drum-Beat is quite misplaced in certain sense since the beginning starts with some 4-Bar-Phrase.......When I sing (I will screw up the Drumming for sure)...hahahaha

Anyway - I can sing along , I'm happy but I can sing well....

fartman17: do you ever had some formal lesson in Singing (if you have you can teach me singing or join the Soft's Singing Meetup also)...that will be nice.

Yes Bro fgl, Phil Collins has all the while been a very good Drummer & Singer altogether....remembering the 1st song I learned to play is his song called - - "Easy Lover".

Yes I love "EASY LOVER"...Kekekekeke !
