Vocal Technique - Lip-Thril/Bubble

Hi all,

I wish to find out, who are facing these 2 problems from lip-thrill?

1) Acidic liquid from stomach seems to be coming out of the mouth.

2) Bloated stomach because of artificially restrained airflow at vocal cord.

I notice, although lip-thrill does help us to reach for higher notes, the artificially imposed technique (the 'brr' + pressing fingers towards the cheeks) creates abnormal effects on the body.

I remember some singers had medical procedures for #1 (above). I suspect they were affected by lip-thrill too..

Do share your opinion. Thanks.

I must first mention that this has never happened to me, but if it is happening to you (probably due to everyone being physically different, or technicalities) - you should consult your instructor if you already have one. My advise as a vocal coach is to stop doing something if you notice something abnormal, because one should never hurt him/herself when they sing. You can always get to the higher notes by another method, even though lip trills may be the easiest and fastest way to do it. - Gary.

Hi, I kind of believe this is an abnormal technique and it has side-effect on our body mechanism. This lip-trill, would induce a 'puking mentality' and the acidic liquid would tend to move upwards.

I remember, one of the most famous Singaporean singers had a medical procedure because of this symptom if not mistaken. And he happened to be practicing a famous singing method which was advocating this lip-trill.

There was another singer in U.S. who had a vocal medical procedure too, and he probably practiced lip-trill too.

I'm now suspending lip-trill and replacing it with classical 'H' consonant scaling. If this symptom were to cease appearing (acidic liquid reaching the vocal) , we could probably conclude that lip-trill was indeed the culprit.

:)

I personally am not a fan of the lip trill because of the strain it puts on the vocal cords. But then again, I only use it to unlock the higher registers and don't use it regularly as a part of a regime. I do think that having a side effect is highly debatable though, since I don't feel any of those symptoms you describe. Guess it's still ultimately a 'if-it-floats-your-boat' kinda issue.

Well, I seriously suggest some group of researchers (doctors) could get together and study the effects of this technique. Just wondering, how often did you do that lip-trill? Initially, I didn't have such issues. It's only when I started to do it consistently, that I began to feel that liquid burning my throat. After stopping it for some time, this problem isn't surfacing again yet.

Perhaps you want to try doing lip-trill for 2 months consistently, and see how it goes?
