Uprights / EUBs!

Hey all,

Was seriously considering getting an upright bass (but preferably EUBs) because I would like to delve deeper into the realm of bass playing, but don't know where to look!

I also understand that most uprights are extremely expensive. Want to look for something that is decent but don't have to sell all my possesions to buy, hehe.. New or 2nd hand, doesnt matter..

I mucked around a bit in JC with uprights with the school band but it wasn't anything serious..but playing arco and pizzicato on uprights is really different from playing the electric bass. The sound also is orgasmic, all that wind!

Can someone point me in the right direction? And not music plaza. I think their silent uprights look nice but don't really sound that fantastic...and the price is sky high (for me la, haha)..

Classical instrument shops can guide you with this. Can check with Synwin at Tanjong Katong Complex I think on the third floor. Or even in Orchard, Music Essentials at side of Meridian Shopping Centre facing the Old Chang Kee. If you're looking for electric upright you'd have to look around for distributors...

That one you can contact me. I'll ask some seniors about it

Yeah, I saw Music Essentials, they have really good stuff. Don't know about Synwin though, might go check it out..

EUBs would be preferred..(also because most are smaller and easier to bring around..hah!)

hi orcfiend, was considering EUBs too.. was deciding between tt and a fretless as my next bass. am currently leaning towards fretless but after trying a few tt i didn't really like EUBs are back on the radar.

if you're around the katong area, check out the store opposite the donut shop along tanjong katong road, near to ms clarity cafe for a pretty gd classical music store.

ive seen this one EUB for 1K plus around peninsula, but have yet to try it. keep the search gg, will be interesting to explore into this area a bit more :)

yeah, i'll try. but since i dont know that much about upright playing (only pizzicato as applied from electric :P ) so it'll be quite hard. so was kinda thinking of asking around soft la, since there should be some pros here :)

anyway walking into shops by myself and asking to try out the instrus when i dont really know how to play a bit...weird haha. i've played fretless b4 but it's hella different from uprights i must say..for me at least..

I'm classically trained on string instruments...

Uprights require a hell lot more stretching. The vertical feel is damn different. And most importantly.... Different sound altogether. Unless you're ready to use your ear more for pitching and mug the feeling of what each note feels like on your left hand, don't touch the uprights yet

I DON'T MIND :D :D :D :D pray tell friend, where did you learn your string instrus! i would def like to know more.

why dun u cont joining an outside band with double basses available for u to play?

juz a suggestion :-D

there are?

but i don't know much about playing double bass, and i def would like to take time out on my own to learn first..yeah. i've been playing electric bass for the past 6 1/2 years now but i dont think it = anything on the double bass haha.

hi, there are community bands like westwinds and hongkah cc etc but they need to audition u most probably

im not sure if NUS's jazz band has access to double basses tho, it might be possible thru CFA, then u could try ur luck there, cos if u dun wanna buy a double bass u have to invest ur commitment :X

if ur talking abt classical bass playing then its definitely not the same as the genres that bass guitar usually play. we can do slapping but it gets very painful after a while.

what genres would u like to play on the bass?

i think u should buy a double bass and learn it first before getting EUBs cos i think that the feel is definitely different with and without the body. but i've nv tried an EUB before. :)

juz another suggestion.

NUS Jazz Band bassists all use their own basses. Like me. =P

No double basses there unless you join the Symphonic Orchestra. Having a double bass doesn't restrict you THAT much...

A lot of stuff can be done with an electric upright which was done on electric bass. The tone is a lot stronger too so for even quite a lot of the rock stuff it'll fit quite nicely with an electric upright.

Having an acoustic bass, much like having an acoustic bass guitar or acoustic ANYTHING would set you back in terms of effects. That's the main deal.

Of course the biggest difference between uprights and bass guitars is mainly slapping and tapping. I think that's the main deal... But uprights with a good bass bow and with a good finger technique more than makes up for that with its crazy full and rich tone.

Yup

I play jazz anyway. Very doable.

I'm trained classically on violin and viola anyway. So I can quite easily get the feel on the bass.

I have a senior in NUS Jazz Band who does Muse stuff all on bass. Listen to patattuci and like stanley clarke. Freaking wicked on the upright. Same with christian mcbride. They don't need no freaking bass guitar. Hahaz. But of course I'm on electric bass guitar. Gives a versatility in the field since I'm more interested in fusion. I would love to be able to play an upright fully well in the future...

and perhaps u'd like to shift the attention of what u can do to what the TS could do or needs to do in his/her situation? :)

please no music essentials, they sunbathe their "precious" wooden instruments by the window, imagine what recurring expansion and contraction might have done to the inners of the instrument alr.
