Sonically, transistors and nanotechnology are (they should be!) pretty much the same, so I think the old foggies like us will still stick to tubes, While the new generation will go for solidstates, transistors/nano alike.
 
Most people would cos of the cost involved and the maintanance, not too sure whether its a matter of age. But with the way technology is going, I'm not surprised in the next 10 yrs valve amplification is sufficiently simulated to the extent of replacement. Especially with changing tastes, who knows, digital distortion would be the 'in' thing (eek!).
