Tube Amps

Hi everyone, I've been using solid state amps for a couple of years, thinking of getting a tube. The problem is, I'm really now sure how they work. Can I just use a tube head alone or do I need the speaker as well? Any information would be great. Thanks

i heard that a tube amp can explode.
is it true?

Yep, with quite dire consequences too. A lil over 50 yrs ago, 2 tube amps exploded in Japan. Flattened 2 cities along with it

It's not the intention of the maker to design it to be explodable or rather implode due to it being vaccum tube. Some time one-off freak case or due to abuse or exegerated by some hyper human.

Same as CRT based television. There is always a risk of implosion, but is always caused by someone's "stupid" action.

For tubes, if you want to go technical. Some defective or worn out tube may become internally shorted during use. So in these cases, the shorting spark may be big enough to be alarming. Worst case it could blow the other components in the amp, rendering it kaput!! I have seen this, but it's internal of the tube only.

A faulty amp could also cause the tube to "red-plate", become overheated, leading to eventual failure. I have never seen a tube overheat till it explode, due to vaccum, imploding may be possible.

So it's best to use reputable tubes, and follow a timeframe to replace your worn out tubes.

Anyway such questions are not necessary. It's like asking: Is it still possible to get Aids if I always wear condom and frequent prositutes?

There is no rules, depend on type of tubes used, circuit design, and how the amp is being used.

Maunfacturer could give hints, but some designs are known to wear down tubes notoriously fast. Manufacturers may not reveal that as it could hurt sales. They would always write it off as 'users fault'

Given the scarce expertise around, tube amps fan have to accept the fact that their passion is an expensive one, and not to skimp on non-reputable sources or amp service person.

That's why most amps in use now are the cheaper, maintainence free transistor amps.

haha, yea rite..
but seriously, can it explode?

Try farting into the amp while you're playing... You never know what might happen... I hope it adds more "organic warmth" to the sound.

HAHA... fretless6, if the explosion didn't happen in Japan, now we would probably be typing Japanese right??

wah man! imagine all the Japanese guitar will be within our reach!!!
