tips for traditional grip playin...

hey guys...would like to get some tips on traditional grip....ntryin to learn traditional grip..hope u guys can help out...thnks

trad grip, find a gd teacher.

i got my trad grip pretty much by force.
i was in the SAF bands and was forced to play trad.
i practiced slow.
i used a mirror to check my grip constantly.
i played slow single notes
i stayed relaxed
the long parades helped with strengening the muscles.
it sort of evolved from there.

getting the correct grip position is the first step, if you don't hold it properly you'll end up looking and playing very stiff. take a look at vinnie colaiuta's grip or perhaps if you can, tony william's trad grip and try to model yourself on that.

yup watching those dudes will pay off. go to local jazz clubs like south bridge and check out how the jazzers do it. ask some military band guys as well. the symphonic players have a diff way of playing it as well.
trad has a diff sound, esp the ghostings. i prefer it. it's a diff mind set as well. but it may just be me hahaha.

the golden word is 'practise'. 'correctly' comes after.

there won't be divine intervention from God to let us learn anything in an instant. so grab your sticks and work on it! :lol:

looks like he's tapping the stick with his middle finger...

anyone who can shed their wisdom to it??

PS: it's mostly seen on joe's solo on take five.
